Tragedy Strikes: Eight-Year-Old Girl Fatally Hit by School Bus

8-year-old girl killed in Kansas after getting hit by school bus

Like many eight year olds, Harmoney Harper was excited about starting the new school year at Oaklawn Elementary in Wichita, Kansas, earlier this month. However, her joy was cut short when a tragic accident took her life, leaving her family and the local community devastated.

On the morning of Wednesday, August 16th, Harmoney was waiting for her school bus with her brother outside their residence when she was struck by another school bus. Despite the quick response from first responders, she remained unresponsive and tragically passed away. Authorities have confirmed that there were no other injuries among the students aboard the bus.

Harmoney’s father, Jasper Harper, recounted the horrifying sequence of events. He shared how his wife heard their son screaming for his sister and rushed outside. Jasper rushed to the front door only to hear the unimaginable. A distraught mother screaming, “Call 911, my daughter’s dead.” Harmoney was just playing outside her own home, where she should have been safe.

Neighbors were jolted by the heartbreaking cries of Harmoney’s mother. One neighbor expressed their wish to offer comfort, saying, “I just wish I could hug the mother right now. I wish she knew that there are tons of people out here praying for her tonight.” Another neighbor empathized with both Harmoney’s family and the bus driver, acknowledging the immense pain they must be feeling.

Law enforcement officials have stated that they do not anticipate filing any charges in connection with the incident. It was truly an unfortunate accident that took the life of an innocent child.

In the wake of their daughter’s untimely passing, Harmoney’s family has established a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses. They humbly request support in the form of donations or heartfelt prayers and words of encouragement. As of now, the campaign has already received an overwhelming response, with 650 donations totaling $30,031.

The Wichita community has been deeply affected by the loss of this young girl. Principal Donna Osborn of Oaklawn Elementary spoke highly of Harmoney, describing her as someone who always had a smile for everyone and was quick to offer a hug. The superintendent, Heather Bohaty, expressed her heartfelt condolences and shared that additional social workers would be available for students and staff as they cope with their grief.

During this tragic time, our thoughts and prayers are with Harmoney’s family and friends. Let us join together to offer them comfort and support as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
