The prequel is set to transport us back to 1991, diving into Dexter’s metamorphosis from schoolboy to avenging serial killer. Helping Dexter along in his not-so-holy quest is his father, Harry (played by Christian Slater). Dexter’s dark desires are ignited when he starts a forensics internship at none other than the Miami Metro Police Department. What could possibly go wrong?

For those just tuning in, Dexter initially captivated audiences from 2006 to 2013 with Michael C. Hall holding the titular reigns. The sensational series garnered several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, proving its cultural impact. A revival titled New Blood popped up in 2021 but, to the despair of many fans, wrapped up after just one season.

Michael C. Hall, Dexter himself, is pragmatic about revisiting the role. “I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to play a young Dexter at this point,” the 53-year-old actor coyly remarked in a 2023 interview. “I think that ship sailed even before we started shooting the [original] series, but I’m open to the possibility.” Spoken like a true thespian!

In February 2023: More Dexter Incoming

As if the prequel news wasn’t enough to have us all on edge, Showtime threw us another twist in February 2023, confirming a fresh iteration of Dexter: New Blood. This time around, it will have its spotlight on Dexter’s son, Harrison (played by Jack Alcott). The plot thickens!

Paramount president Chris McCarthy could barely contain his excitement in a press release, “The Dexter saga has been an undeniable creative and popular success for Showtime, both in its original, groundbreaking form and the record-setting Dexter: New Blood. The series is a rich foundation for other shows in the lane of complex, subversive antiheroes that Showtime has always done so brilliantly.”

Now, if that doesn’t sound like the TV equivalent of a juicy steak, we don’t know what does. And McCarthy wasn’t done yet: “I couldn’t be more excited about exploring and expanding the universe of Dexter. It’s a privilege to contemplate going even deeper with these complex and iconic characters — and the stories, themes and possibilities they inspire.”

So, with Sarah Michelle Gellar stepping into the fray and Showtime pulling out all the stops, Dexter: Original Sin is shaping up to be a must-watch. Buckle up, because the world of Dexter just got a whole lot more exciting!
