A Canadian woman named Vanessa Chaput experienced a terrifying bear attack while jogging with her German shepherd, Luna. On June 30th, around 10:30 p.m., the unexpected encounter took place on the Trans Canada Trail. Vanessa, who was 24 at the time, suddenly found herself surrounded by four bears after turning a corner. Luna quickly sprang into action and managed to chase off two of the smaller bears.

Left alone to face a large male bear, Vanessa tried to back away and hid behind a tree, but the bear tracked her down easily. In a moment of horror, the bear took her head into its mouth, causing her to fall to the ground. During the attack, her hair clip broke inside the bear’s mouth. Vanessa speculated that the clip’s spring may have exploded in the bear’s mouth, providing her with a brief reprieve.

Vanessa suffered injuries to her spine, thighs, and arms. Remarkably, Luna returned and succeeded in driving away the final bear. Authorities believe Luna’s persistent barking likely saved her life. Vanessa expressed immense gratitude, feeling extremely fortunate and thankful.

During the attack, Vanessa didn’t recall feeling any pain or screaming but vividly remembered being thrown around, describing the experience as feeling like a rag doll. A nearby campground was evacuated as a safety precaution after the incident. Following the attack, a conservation officer euthanized a bear in the area and later euthanized two more bears that matched the involved bears’ descriptions.

The Yukon Conservation Officer Services emphasized that such decisions are made to ensure public safety, taking them very seriously. Vanessa spent ten days in the hospital and received over 30 stitches before being released.
