Inside Out 2 has surpassed Dune: Part Two at the box office in just two weeks — becoming the highest-grossing North American release of 2024, according to Variety.
In just over a week from its debut, the 2024 Pixar movie had amassed an impressive $355 million in domestic earnings and $724 million worldwide. In comparison, Dune: Part Two’s total domestic revenue is $282 million, with a global tally of $711 million.
The family-friendly flick clinched the second-biggest opening ever for an animated film, only behind the 2018 sequel Incredibles 2, which garnered $182 million in its domestic debut weekend.
Last year, Barbie achieved over $1.3 billion globally in ticket sales after a month, setting a record for Warner Bros. as its highest-earning theatrical release and joining the elite club of movies that have crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office.
Joining this elite club are animated films like Frozen, Frozen II, Incredibles 2, Minions, Toy Story 4, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which have demonstrated the massive global appeal of animated storytelling.
Inside Out 2 explores the new phase of life for a now-teenage Riley as she navigates the ups and downs of puberty with four new emotions: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui.
According to the film’s synopsis, Riley’s existing emotions – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear – are uncertain about these new feelings, especially when Anxiety makes its first appearance. They must work together to ensure Riley’s identity remains unshaken.
Tony Hale, who lends his voice to the character Fear, shared his personal connection to Anxiety. Hale mentioned, “It’s very easy to go to anxiety. It’s very easy for me to live in the ‘What if?’ It takes work, which is really ironic because we’re in the present. It takes work to be present!”
