Controversial Inventor Dr. Death Says His ‘Suicide Capsules’ Will Ask Users Three Questions Before Death

Dr. Philip Nitschke, often referred to by his moniker ‘Dr. Death’, is an Australian euthanasia advocate known for his contentious work in self-assisted dying. In 1997, he founded Exit International, an organization that provides information and education for adults over the age of 50 about practical end-of-life choices.

Back in August 2023, Nitschke announced to MailOnline that his newly-developed suicide capsules, intended to offer a ‘peaceful, reliable, drug-free’ method of dying, were finally ready for use. He created these capsules, also known as the ‘Sarco Pod’, with the goal of providing an autonomous life-ending option even for those with severe conditions like locked-in syndrome.

The 3D-printed capsule isn’t approved for use yet, but it’s designed to offer an alternative to existing legal assisted dying methods where healthcare professionals must administer sodium pentobarbital. The Sarco Pod operates by rapidly decreasing the oxygen level while maintaining a low CO2 level, facilitating what Exit International claims to be a ‘peaceful, even euphoric death’.

Prospective users will be asked three critical questions inside the machine: ‘Who are you?’, ‘Where are you?’ and ‘Do you know what happens if you press the button?’ If these questions are answered correctly, the software enables a button that, when pressed, swiftly lowers the oxygen level from 21% to less than 1% within 30 seconds, leading to a quick death.

The capsules, priced between $4,000 (£3,100) and $8,000 (£6,200), are in final preparation stages for use in Switzerland, where strict criteria govern who is eligible for assisted death. Potential users would need to be members of Exit International, with membership costing $100 (£78).

It’s important to note that discussions around euthanasia and assisted dying are deeply controversial and complex, often intersecting with legal, ethical, and personal beliefs. In the UK, numerous support services are available for those struggling with mental health issues or contemplating such choices.
