My name is Claire, and I’m fifty-five years old.
I met Margaret in 1998 at a sewing circle, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.
She was seventy-two when she passed, alone in that big house except for me.
Her son Jonathan and daughter Emily only showed up when they needed money.
Margaret used to cry on my shoulder about it, saying they’d forgotten her.
In her last months, I was the one bathing her, reading to her, holding her hand while the machines beeped.
I sat at the memorial in my usual spot in the back, invisible as dust.
Then the lawyer, Mr. Fielding, stopped mid-sentence and said, “Claire, would you mind coming up here?”
I froze.
Jonathan’s jaw tightened, and Emily whispered something sharp to her brother.
I shuffled to the second row, my hands clammy.
I figured they just needed a witness or something.
Mr. Fielding cleared his throat and began reading the standard bequests.
Jonathan got the old car, Emily the jewelry box.
Standard, boring, done.
Then he pulled out a thick cream envelope with a wax seal.
My stomach flipped.
He read from a personal letter Margaret had written two weeks before she died.
“It pains me to say,” Mr. Fielding recited, “that my children have become strangers who only visit when my checkbook is open.”
Jonathan’s face went red.
“The only person who saw me as a mother, not an ATM,” the letter continued, “was Claire.”
Emily stood up.
Mr. Fielding ignored her and read the next line.
“I BEQUEATH MY ENTIRE ESTATE — THE HOUSE, THE SAVINGS, EVERYTHING — TO MY DEAREST FRIEND, CLAIRE WALKER.”
I couldn’t breathe.
The room exploded.
Jonathan shouted, Emily sobbed, and someone kicked a pew.
Then Mr. Fielding held up a second envelope and the room went silent.
“Margaret also left this,” he said quietly. “To be opened immediately.”
He unfolded a single page.
“Claire, it’s time to reveal the truth about Richard’s death.”
My blood ran cold.
Richard was Margaret’s husband. He died twenty years ago in a “hunting accident.”
I had no idea what she meant.
Emily lunged toward me.
“What is she talking about?” she screamed. “WHAT DID YOU DO?”
