I had never imagined blocking someone after the best dinner I’d had in years, but that’s exactly what I was contemplating. There I was, staring at my phone, my fingers hovering over the screen. All it took was one small moment, one offhand comment, and suddenly, everything felt wrong.
I hadn’t been on a proper date in quite some time—not due to lack of desire, but life just had a way of getting in the way with work, friends, and family. But when Hayden, a guy I met at a mutual friend’s dinner party, asked me out, I figured it was finally time to step out of my routine.
Still, the idea of dating felt daunting until I met Hayden. He was charming with an easygoing nature, which made me feel comfortable. He didn’t try too hard to impress me—something I appreciated.
We talked for hours about anything and everything: from jobs to childhood memories. Hayden was a teacher, which said a lot about his patience and humor.
“I know this might be a bit forward, but… would you like to grab dinner with me sometime?” Hayden asked with a grin that seemed to anticipate a “yes.” I found myself smiling back and agreeing.
The days leading up to the date were filled with my usual hectic schedule, but the thought of eating out with Hayden lingered in my mind. Would we have the same chemistry outside of the dinner party setting? I was excited yet a bit nervous.
I suggested a cozy Mexican place I adored, but Hayden asked for my favorite restaurant—an upscale Italian spot I rarely went to due to the steep prices. To my surprise, he wanted to go there.
When he insisted despite my caution about the expense, I shrugged it off. It was just dinner, after all.
When Friday night rolled around and Hayden arrived right on time looking polished but not overdone, I sensed this would be an evening to remember.
“You look amazing, Asta,” he complimented as a genuine warmth spread across his face.
As we sat at the restaurant, things carried on smoothly. The atmosphere was elegant, the food delightful. We talked about his job and students—his passion for teaching was evident and admirable.
Eventually, we moved on to deeper topics like my bartending job. The conversation stayed meaningful, especially with Hayden showing a genuine interest in my life and experiences.
By dessert, the date seemed like a success. We’d enjoyed a good meal, great conversation, and everything felt easy.
Then the bill arrived.
When I saw the total—over $500—I immediately felt awkward, not wanting Hayden to cover such a big expense. I offered to split it, and we both handed over our cards. But Hayden stopped to inspect mine.
“I’ve got this,” he said, smiling, “But now I finally know your last name.”
Though harmless, the way he said it struck a chord with me. I forced a laugh, but inside, I wasn’t comfortable. Perhaps it was an overreaction, yet it felt off.
After dessert, he offered to drive me home, but I politely declined, needing the fresh air.
Once I got home, I blocked him. Maybe it sounds dramatic, or maybe Hayden had only meant to be playful—but I couldn’t shake the discomfort.
Regardless of what it was, boundaries had been crossed, and I didn’t feel right about it. I realized it was okay to stand firm on those feelings—even if friends disagreed.
Looking back, I have no regrets. I followed my instincts. And the next time someone asks me out, we’ll definitely keep it low-key.
