Failed Trump assassination suspect Ryan Routh captured on bodycam video
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida released a video showing the arrest of Ryan Routh, 58, the suspect in an attempted assassination of former President Trump. The footage, captured on officer-worn bodycam, was made public on Monday.
The arrest took place on northbound Interstate 95 after deputies surrounded Routh’s vehicle. Martin County Sheriff Will Snyder discussed the incident during a press briefing, explaining that Routh was instructed to exit his vehicle with his hands on his head and walk backwards towards the deputies.
Authorities accuse Routh of hiding armed with an SKS-style rifle near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, waiting for an opportunity to attack the former president. The Secret Service agents fired at him upon seeing the rifle.
Routh managed to flee the golf course, but he was arrested shortly after when a witness shared a photo of his vehicle with authorities.
Sheriff Snyder mentioned that Routh was caught near the Palm City exit on I-95, and it took approximately two miles to coordinate enough resources to stop his vehicle. Despite Routh’s attempts to blend in with traffic, authorities successfully apprehended him.
Routh had a federal court hearing in West Palm Beach on Monday morning, where he faced charges for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Additional federal charges might be possible, but these initial charges ensure that Routh remains in custody.
