Simone Biles Reflects on Criticism Over Her Hair: ‘I’m Not Embarrassed’

Simone Biles, the phenomenal Olympic gymnast, opens up about her journey towards embracing her natural hair amid public criticism.

In a heartfelt interview with Elle Magazine, Biles shared, “I’m finally learning to love my hair and the texture that I have and the styles that I can do.”

She confessed, “I used to worry about [my hair being considered] not professional. But I’m not embarrassed about it anymore.”

Biles explained that growing up, “nobody taught” her how to manage her hair, so she often sought professional help.

In 2023, despite her glowing accomplishments, Biles faced online criticism after sharing joyous wedding photos with her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens. Some social media users felt her hair looked unkempt.

Commenting on the criticism, Biles expressed, “Most of the backlash we get is from our own community, which is unfortunate.”

“I don’t really care if my edges aren’t smooth,” she continued. “I never thought about my hair like the way other people see it.”

Biles also discussed how her rigorous schedule as a professional gymnast left her limited time to dedicate to hair care. She noted that social media has provided useful tips and guidance.

“We can take better care of our hair and beauty routines because it’s self-taught,” she explained. “It’s really special that we have access to those platforms.”

Preparing for the Paris Olympics, where the Opening Ceremony will be held on July 26, Biles emphasized the importance of self-care.

“I understand and realize I have to take care of my physical appearance as well as my mental,” she stated.
