Whoopi Goldberg Releases Comic Book She Wrote ‘25 Years Ago’ About Hero Who ‘Embraces’ Powers of Menopause

When it comes to comics, Whoopi Goldberg decided to be the change she wanted to see in the world.

During a recent episode of The View, the beloved actress and TV personality announced that her comic book, “The Change,” is now available. She shared some intriguing details about its unique protagonist, whom she once envisioned herself playing!

Whoopi, known for her roles in classics like “Sister Act” and “The Color Purple,” revealed she was inspired to write the book because she wanted more representation in a medium she has always cherished.

“I love comic books,” she said. “I’ve adored them since I was a little kid. But none seemed to speak to me, so I wrote my own.”

The comic was co-written with screenwriter Jaime Paglia and illustrated by Sunkanmi Akinboye. Its main character, Isabel Frost, is an ordinary woman who discovers extraordinary powers during menopause.

Explaining Frost’s powers, Whoopi cited a scene from “The Change”. In the middle of an argument with her husband, Frost’s irritation causes him to start feeling extremely hot.

“She’s basically cooking him,” Whoopi explained, noting that at that point in the story, Frost is unaware of her powers.

“She transfers her heat to him,” co-host Sunny Hostin speculated, to which Whoopi replied, “Well, she does what all good superheroes do: when you don’t stop talking, they move you.”

Whoopi also discussed Frost’s look. “So many superheroes have wonderful chests and magnificent bodies. She does not. She looks like a regular person,” Whoopi explained. “And she’s put on weight. And she’s funny.”

Whoopi admitted that she originally wrote the character with herself in mind but has since aged out of the role.

According to an official synopsis, “The Change” follows Frost, “a woman who has spent her life as a wife, mother, and grandmother—a life that hasn’t fulfilled her expectations, with a husband who has grown in another direction.”

Frost, who has a background in computer science and is an avid gamer, discovers her powers with the help of her comic-loving grandson and best friend. She must learn to control her abilities and accept her new identity as “The Change”—both the change of life and her extraordinary new powers.

Whoopi Goldberg’s debut comic book, “The Change,” is available now, wherever books are sold.
