Matthew McConaughey Shocks Fans with His Swollen Eye: ‘Bee Swell’

Matthew McConaughey shared a selfie to Instagram showing his right eye completely swollen shut — and he appeared to blame the injury on an incident with a bee.

Matthew McConaughey, the beloved actor, showcased a rather surprising look recently. On Wednesday, July 10, McConaughey, 54, shared a close-up photo of himself on Instagram with his right eye completely swollen shut. The actor hinted at an encounter with a bee, captioning the photo humorously with “bee swell.” Despite the concerning injury, McConaughey seemed to be in good spirits, smiling wide for the camera.

Even with the bee incident, McConaughey has been keeping busy. Just a few days earlier, he and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, celebrated their eldest son Levi’s birthday on July 7. They sweetly marked the occasion by posting a montage of photos featuring their 16-year-old and a heartfelt voice message.

In the message, the “Interstellar” star shared some touching words for his son: “Alright Levi, coming on that age, buddy. About to be out on your own. Me and your mom hope we’ve done as good of a job as we can. You’re not gonna really have us as a safety net out there in the wonderful, wild world forever.” The couple also has two younger children: 14-year-old Vida and 11-year-old Livingston.

In a candid chat with fellow Texan Glen Powell for Interview magazine last June, McConaughey opened up about taking a two-year hiatus from Hollywood. This break followed a period where he struggled to land roles outside of romantic comedies — a genre where he had great success in films like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

Reflecting on that challenging time, McConaughey said, “Dude, it was scary. I had long talks with my wife about needing to find a new vocation.” He even considered several different paths, from teaching high school to studying music or becoming a wildlife guide. He admitted, “The days are long — the sense of insignificance. But I made up my mind that that’s what I needed to do, so I wasn’t going to pull the parachute and quit the mission I was on. But it was scary because I didn’t know if I was ever going to get out of the desert.”

McConaughey last graced the big screen with his voice role as Buster Moon in the 2021 animated movie “Sing 2” and recently appeared in Zach Bryan’s music video for the song “Nine Ball.”
