Meet Jess and Marty Ansen, who have embraced a unique adventure. In June 2022, they boarded the Coral Princess and haven’t looked back since. “Whenever we see a chance for another cruise, we book it,” says Marty enthusiastically.
The couple found that living on a cruise is not just affordable but enriches their quality of life with endless adventures. They enjoy many perks, such as luxurious dining and housekeeping services, plus a myriad of activities like ballroom dancing and games to keep active. Jess jokes, “We don’t have to wash dishes or make the bed anymore!”

Life on a cruise ship has also allowed them to form new connections, meeting both crew members and other passengers. According to the ship’s hotel manager, Ren van Rooyen, Jess and Marty have become familiar faces onboard.
Sad Realities of the Economy
While Jess and Marty enjoy their sea-bound life, the housing situation ashore isn’t rosy. By the end of their first cruise year, over half a million people in the U.S. had lost their homes. About 18 in 10,000 people were struggling to make rent or mortgage payments, not to mention the soaring utility and grocery costs. Travel and entertainment budgets have become luxuries for many.
At the end of last year, renting was more cost-effective than buying a home, especially with interest rates at an all-time high. Unfortunately, things look grim with further economic decline expected, leaving many more families facing financial uncertainty.
