The Devil Wears Prada Is Back! All About the Sequel to the 2006 Film

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is getting a sequel, set for release in July 2024.

Unlike florals for spring, this news is truly groundbreaking: The Devil Wears Prada is back!

The classic 2006 film is officially getting a sequel, with the producer of the original film making a return, as reported by Puck News. This cult favorite, based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling book, originally charted the journey of Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, as she navigated the demanding world of high-fashion journalism under the formidable editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly, portrayed by Meryl Streep.

Andy’s character is a recent college graduate with aspirations in journalism but finds herself as a junior assistant for the fearsome Miranda Priestly. The job tests Andy’s limits as she tries to balance her demanding work life with her personal relationships, including those with her boyfriend and colleagues, Emily (Emily Blunt) and Nigel (Stanley Tucci).

The original film was a massive success, raking in $326 million at the global box office and earning several accolades, including an Academy Award nomination for Streep.

Here’s what we know so far about the much-anticipated sequel.

What will The Devil Wears Prada 2 be about?

According to Puck, the sequel will likely see Miranda Priestly continuing her reign at Runway and facing challenges in an increasingly digital magazine world, struggling to secure advertising revenue. Meanwhile, Emily has climbed up the ladder and is working with one of Runway’s luxury brand conglomerates.

The film could also draw from Weisberger’s sequel novel, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, in which Andy and Emily, now seasoned magazine editors, reunite with Miranda making another unexpected entry into Andy’s life.

Who is in the cast?

No casting is officially confirmed yet, but rumors indicate that Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, and Stanley Tucci are in talks to return, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Fans got a small dose of nostalgia when Hathaway, Blunt, and Streep shared the stage at the SAG Awards in February 2024. Blunt even referenced a memorable line from the original film, adding to the excitement for the sequel.

In January 2024, Hathaway and Blunt discussed their experiences filming the original movie during Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. Blunt shared, “We had a joy bomb of a time on that movie. It changed my life and is quoted to me every week.”

What has the original cast said about a sequel?

Despite their love for the original film, the cast has expressed mixed feelings about a sequel.

In April 2024, Hathaway mentioned to Extra her skepticism about a sequel’s potential, noting that she doesn’t think a continuation is likely. Meanwhile, Blunt has wavered between excitement and doubt. In 2018, she shared, “If everyone did it, I would be up for it, but sometimes sequels can dilute how special the original is.”

Blunt later voiced enthusiasm for a sequel during a 2022 appearance on The View, saying she would love to work with the team again. Hathaway, appearing on The View shortly after, reflected on how much the world has changed, questioning the relevance of another installment based on the film’s original themes.

Hathaway suggested that fresh faces could take on the iconic roles if a reboot were to happen. “They could find new people and do it. Do you think they’d let us do that?” she mused.

Blunt recently stated on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in February 2024 that the cast is “good” without a sequel. “Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble and it’s okay,” she said.

Who is directing The Devil Wears Prada 2?

Wendy Finerman, who produced the original film, will be returning, and, per Deadline, discussions are underway with David Frankel, the original director, about his return.

Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the screenplay for the 2006 film, is also onboard for the sequel.

In celebration of the film’s 15th anniversary in 2021, Frankel and McKenna spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the challenges of creating a sequel, noting that the magazine industry has dramatically evolved since the initial release. They felt that just following the characters again wouldn’t capture the same magic.

McKenna remarked that exploring how magazines have adapted to the digital age could make for an intriguing sequel. “Magazines and publishing have changed so much,” she said. “It’s a different world now.”
