Garbage truck drivers may not always be the first people you think of when it comes to rescuing animals, but they often play an unexpected role in saving our furry friends. Every now and then, these heroes encounter animals caught up in unfortunate circumstances, whether they’re foraging for food or have been abandoned.
One such hero recently made headlines by rescuing a little dog who ended up in his garbage truck. His quick thinking and sharp eyes ensured the dog’s survival and helped her avoid a tragic end.
According to the Capital Area Humane Society in Michigan, a Granger Waste Services employee was on his usual route early in the morning of July 19 when he noticed an unexpected passenger in his truck.
The passenger was a tiny white dog. It’s not entirely clear how she ended up in the trash collection, but given the route included commercial-grade dumpsters, the little pup went through a harrowing ordeal before being found.
“It is almost unbelievable that she endured being transferred from a dumpster, into a garbage truck, and then withstood the journey and the unloading process,” the Capital Area Humane Society shared on Facebook.
The dog faced significant challenges, but her story could have been much darker if not for the attentive driver. She could have easily ended up in a trash compactor, a fate too horrific to consider. “Without his keen eye, she would have certainly suffered a horrific fate,” the Humane Society emphasized.
Fortunately, the dog is now in stable condition and under the care of Ingham County Animal Control, which is currently investigating the case. Due to the ongoing cruelty investigation, the dog will not be put up for adoption yet and will stay in protective custody for the time being.
Though the investigation continues and many questions remain, there’s no doubt that the garbage truck driver who saved this pup is an absolute hero. The Humane Society has even gotten quite a few interesting inquiries about the driver himself!
“For those of you who have shown interest in the Granger employee, he is not available for adoption either,” they joked, adding a touch of humor to the situation.
