Marathoner and TikTok Exec, 38, Diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer: ‘I Thought I Was in the Best Shape of My Life’

Govind Sandhu says he feels “lucky” while documenting his diagnosis — and his treatment — for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Govind Sandhu, a 38-year-old marathon runner and head of Global Music Partnerships at TikTok Australia, recently shared his unexpected diagnosis of stage 4 cancer. Despite being in peak physical condition, Sandhu found himself facing this life-altering news.

In an emotional Instagram video, Sandhu revealed: “I’m 38 years old and I’ve been diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. What. The. Hell? This wasn’t exactly part of my five-year plan.” He had always believed that his rigorous training and healthy lifestyle would shield him from such illnesses.

Sandhu was a dedicated Crossfitter and marathon runner, who had just completed the demanding “75 Hard” fitness regime. He was on a fitness high, basking in the results of his hard work, and was even training intensively in Bali.

He learned of his diagnosis shortly after running the Sydney half-marathon, a race he completed while unknowingly battling cancer. “Speechless,” he described his reaction upon receiving the news.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system where white blood cells grow uncontrollably, forming tumors. According to the Mayo Clinic, this condition can manifest in various parts of the body. Although Govind has not shared his long-term prognosis, the five-year survival rate varies between 57% and 86%, as noted by Verywell Health.

Govind chose to document his cancer journey publicly, sharing the ups and downs with his followers. One memorable post featured him holding six pills, his “cancer meds,” which would ready him for another day of chemotherapy. With a sense of humor and resilience, he captioned the image by saying they “supercharged” him for the battle ahead.

On his way to a two-day chemotherapy session at Saint Vincent’s Private Hospital, Sandhu shared his feelings in a video, maintaining a positive outlook. “To be honest, I’m feeling up for it. I had a good night’s sleep, a nice dinner, and a lovely breakfast. I see it as another step on the road to recovery.”

His upbeat attitude continued in another video where he gave a “tour de chemo ward,” sending peace signs while receiving treatment. “Very lucky,” he wrote, updating his followers after his second day of chemo.

Sandhu expressed gratitude for the support he received and acknowledged the overwhelming nature of the first day. Despite everything, he felt “super comfortable” and “very lucky,” considering it a successful day under the circumstances.
