First Lady Jill Biden Defends Joe Biden in New Vogue Profile

First Lady Jill Biden is standing strong by her husband, President Joe Biden, following a challenging televised debate. President Biden faced a crucial debate against former President Donald Trump, leaving many Democrats concerned about his chances for reelection. Jill Biden appears on this month’s cover of Vogue magazine, which hit the stands on Monday.

During her Vogue interview, Jill Biden expressed her unwavering support and shared insights into the initiatives her husband has championed. “If people knew what Joe’s done… If they knew all of that − I mean, the bridge is being built in their city and they don’t know who did it. They don’t know who’s getting the lead out of their water. They don’t know who’s stopping the pipeline going through the parklands. They don’t know,” she said.

She emphasized their efforts to communicate these achievements, stating, “That’s why I’m trying to be out there. Why we’re all trying. To say, ‘This is what we’ve achieved, and this is how it affects your life.’”

With the Biden Family, First Lady Encourages Him to Stay in Race

After the debate, the Biden family gathered at Camp David. Jill Biden mentioned they “will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president” and vowed to keep fighting. Vogue’s editor’s note remarked that she remains the president’s “closest confidant.”

New York Times White House correspondent Katie Rogers told Vogue, “People don’t mention her when they talk about Biden’s key advisers, but she’s his gut check. And she really believes in her husband’s ability to get things done for the American people—whether they’re his supporters or not. That’s why she’s fighting so hard for him to get a second term.”

In the aftermath of the debate, some Democrats, both privately and publicly, have questioned whether Biden should remain their presumptive nominee. NBC News shared that for the Bidens, the decision is deeply personal and familial. Ultimately, President Biden will take his cue from Jill.

“If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course,” an insider shared with NBC.

Stumping for the President with Key Electorates

Throughout Biden’s presidency, Jill Biden has been a significant adviser. She shared with Vogue, “Really, in so many different areas, I tell him what I’m seeing, what I’m hearing − and he gets it. And this is where the magic happens.”

In addition to being an advisor, Jill Biden has spearheaded the White House’s initiative on women’s health research. On the 2024 campaign trail, she acts as a crucial voice and empathetic ear for the campaign, notably reaching out to women voters, a pivotal group for the upcoming election.

“Look, I know that food prices are up,” she told Vogue. “I go to the grocery store when I’m in Wilmington. And I raised three kids and did the food shopping for how many years before we got to this job? It’s not like I don’t know.”

Earlier this year, the first lady rallied Women for Biden supporters in Minneapolis, touching on matters such as reproductive rights following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. “We are the first generation in half a century to give our daughters a country with fewer rights than we had,” she said. “Book bans. Voting laws gutted. Court decisions that strip away our most basic freedoms. But circumstance is not destiny.”
