Why Kevin Costner Says He’s Just Like His 7-Month-Old Puppy Bobby

In a heartwarming new conversation, Kevin Costner, the celebrated Oscar-winning actor and director of ‘Horizon,’ reveals the unique bond he shares with his 7-month-old Labrador puppy, Bobby.

It was love at first sight for Kevin Costner and his now 7-month-old Labrador puppy, Bobby. Kevin, the Oscar-winning actor and director, introduced this furry family member on Instagram back in February, saying, “I’m already in love with this special guy.” From the start, their bond has only grown stronger.

“I’m like Bob,” Kevin says. He explains that both he and Bobby have a tendency to move from extreme passivity to being fully engaged and present. “Bob just gets in the car. He does not care where we go. Bob’s lazy; all he does is sleep. He just goes ‘woof’ at the door a few times. But if I put Bobby in the field, you see his IQ go up 30 points. He looks like an Adonis of dogs. He just knows exactly who he is,” Kevin adds.

Kevin sees a similar trait in himself. “I can be very passive in my life,” says the Oscar winner, whose epic Western ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ hits theaters on June 28. “But once I commit to a movie, I’m relentless there. All they have to do is get me to the set, and then I know what I’m doing. I become like Bobby.”

Reflecting on his work, Kevin says, “I’m not sure what’s going on, but you get me on a set, and my IQ goes up 30 points…. I know what I need to do. That’s the closest to watching an animal be exactly where they need to be and how they look in the wild.”

Bobby spent time on the set with Kevin while he filmed the third of four planned chapters of the ambitious ‘Horizon’ project. The adorable pup has one quirk, though, that Kevin does not share—a fondness for sleeping in the dishwasher. “I have to push him out,” Kevin says, noting Bobby has outgrown this favorite spot. “He’s too heavy now. He wants to get in there, and he’s not comfortable with me kicking him out.”

Kevin Costner recognizes the similarities between Bobby’s behavior in the field and his own behavior on a film set. For both, it is about being in the right environment where they can thrive and perform at their best. He humorously notes that Bobby used to look cute sleeping in the dishwasher, but now he resembles “a big towel in there, a big white towel.”

While Bobby’s dishwasher naps are a thing of the past, the bond and mutual admiration between Kevin and his canine companion continue to grow. This connection is evident both in their everyday lives and in the moments they share on the set of Kevin’s latest projects.
