When Emily and Damon discovered their boys look astonishingly alike, their blind date took an unexpected turn. Determined to untangle this mystery, Damon decided to speak to his troubled ex-wife, while Emily discovered a letter that contained a life-altering secret.
Emily arrived at the Italian restaurant for her blind date with Damon, wearing a rainbow-colored clown wig, just as they had planned online. Damon, sporting a paper hat, was waiting anxiously in a corner. As they approached each other, their eyes met, and Damon greeted her warmly. “Emily!”
Their initial exchange was comforting and pleasant, making Emily relieved and happy. The natural connection between them was evident as they joked about her wig and began a casual conversation.
Soon, they started talking about their boys. Damon showed Emily a picture of his son next to an abstract painting, which left Emily startled. The boy looked just like her son Bradley.
Confused, she asked, “Is this some kind of joke?”
Damon, puzzled, replied, “What do you mean? My son loves painting. Are you saying your son looks like mine?”
Emily took out her phone and showed Damon a picture of Bradley in his soccer gear. Both adults were now bewildered.
“Our boys are like long-lost twins—mirror images!” Emily exclaimed. “Wait, your son and my son are both 14?”
“Yes, 14. What’s your son’s birthday?” Damon asked.
“April 16th,” Emily replied.
“That’s the same as Jordan’s,” Damon said, deep in thought. “This can’t be a coincidence… My ex never mentioned twins.”
Emily asked, “Damon, do you know anything about this?”
“No, but my ex-wife might. If we had twins, she would know. I need to find out. I’m sorry, but I have to leave now,” Damon said abruptly, rushing out.
Left alone, Emily thought about how her late husband Jack had handled Bradley’s adoption. She wondered if Jack had known about a twin.
Not long before Emily came home from a knee surgery, Jack got a call about a baby up for adoption. When she finally returned, Jack was at the door with a baby boy wrapped in a dinosaur blanket. The baby was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, and Jack was beaming with joy.
As Emily tried to comprehend the situation, her son Bradley appeared to notice her distress.
“Mom, what’s wrong? Did Damon do something to hurt you?” Bradley asked, concerned.
Emily, forcing a smile, replied, “Everything’s fine, honey,” before rushing to her bedroom.
Emily searched everywhere for Bradley’s adoption documents but couldn’t find them. She realized she had never seen them, trusting Jack had taken care of everything perfectly.
Determined, she changed into her house clothes and headed to the attic. In the dim flashlight beam, she sifted through a chest of Jack’s belongings, hoping to find some answers.
Jack had died unexpectedly, leaving Emily in shock. They were planning a family vacation the day before he died in a car accident caused by a brain aneurysm on his way home.
Still grieving and dealing with Jack’s death, Emily had asked her brother to help pack Jack’s things into the attic. Now searching for information about Bradley’s adoption, she found an envelope with Jack’s handwriting.
The letter began, “Dear Emily, I’ve been lying to you for almost a year.”
Meanwhile, Damon revisited the facility where his ex-wife Naomi had been living—a place he hadn’t visited in three years. The atmosphere was uneasy with silent orderlies and distracted patients.
Naomi met Damon coldly, “I told you not to come back, Damon.”
“I know, but this is important. Can you tell me what happened the night our son was born?” he asked.
Naomi looked troubled, her eyes darting around. “I told you. I followed that tall man’s orders. I can’t remember more!”
In college, Damon and Naomi were happy. Their joy grew when Naomi got pregnant soon after Damon began working for a top company. However, Naomi’s preeclampsia, leading to severe headaches and blurred vision, turned their joy to concern.
Naomi’s condition worsened; she fired her doctor and quit her job. Her paranoia grew, believing someone threatened their unborn child. She once claimed a tall man warned her about danger while shopping, though no one else had approached them.
Damon convinced Naomi to see a psychologist, who diagnosed her with stress-induced schizophrenia—revelation of a family history she had hidden, making treatment harder.
As Naomi’s due date neared, Damon’s excitement for their child turned into worry for Naomi. When Naomi went missing with over a month left in her pregnancy, Damon’s desperate search began.
Naomi was finally found in labor in an alley and taken to the hospital, where she told Damon she was giving up their baby and divorcing him.
Years later, sitting across from Naomi, Damon asked if she had given birth to twins. Her mind clouded, she denied it, mentioning only Jordan and a “parasite.”
Reading Jack’s letter, Emily learned that he had hidden his terminal brain aneurysm from her, fabricated Bradley’s adoption documents, and had saved a baby from an alley.
“I intended to give the baby to the police but knew you were meant to be his mother the moment I saw him. I convinced Michael to forge the adoption papers.”
Emily wept, clutching the letter, pondering whether to tell Damon that Bradley might be his biological son. She hesitated but eventually called Damon.
A tense Emily answered, “Hello?
Damon, getting into his car, replied, “I’ve just spoken to Naomi. She said something odd about Jordan’s birth night. She has schizophrenia. It’s important, Emily.”
“Come over. I’ve found something too,” Emily invited.
At her house, Damon recounted Naomi’s story about believing she had twins and a “parasite.” He suspected she may have abandoned one baby.
“I don’t think the baby was in a dumpster,” Emily said, handing Damon Jack’s letter.
“So Jack saved my son?” Damon realized, reading the letter.
Emily pleaded, “Please, don’t take Bradley away. You have the right, but please don’t.”
“No one wants to take me!” Bradley, holding Jack’s hunting rifle, burst into the room. “I’m not leaving you!”
“Bradley, I’m not here to take you,” Damon reassured, raising his hands. “You’re Emily’s son. I won’t change that.”
Emily broke down, hugging Damon and whispering “thank you.” She then turned to Bradley, smiling gratefully.
“Bradley, put the rifle down. I’m sorry you heard so much, but we can’t change anything now. Please sit so Damon and I can explain,” Emily urged.
“Damon? The same Damon you dated?” Bradley asked, lowering the rifle.
“Yes, but there’s more we need to explain,” Emily said. Together, she and Damon told Bradley the truth.
“So, Jordan and I are brothers, and you’re my dad?” Bradley asked.
“We might be. A DNA test can confirm it,” Emily answered.
“Why me? Why did she abandon my brother instead of me?” Bradley asked Damon, pained.
“Naomi was very ill, suffering from schizophrenia. She thought there was only one baby. She asked Jack to take you,” Damon explained gently.
Bradley accepted, though he struggled to hold back tears.
“What happens now?” he asked.
“We’ll do a DNA test. If it confirms everything, we’ll decide together. We’re a family,” Damon said, holding Emily’s hand.
“This has been an incredible first date, hasn’t it?” Damon joked to Emily.
Emily laughed nervously. “You can say that again!”
Damon reassured Bradley, “I know this is a lot to take in. But we’ll get through this together, as a family. Emily and I want what’s best for you.”
Bradley nodded slowly. “I just need some time to process.”
“Of course, honey. Take your time. We’ll figure this out together,” Emily responded, her eyes full of understanding and love.
As Bradley went upstairs, Emily looked to Damon, her expression a mix of gratitude and confusion.
“Damon, what do we do next? How do we handle this?” Emily asked.
Damon sighed, running a hand through his hair. “We should tell Jordan, but that can wait. First, let’s get that DNA test. It will give us clarity. We’ll decide our next steps together, as a family.”
