Imagine living in a house built way back in the 16th century. In my home country, such charming homes seem like they’re straight out of a fairy tale. As villages shrink, wooden structures deteriorate, and brick houses slowly fall apart, many people might think preserving old buildings is a lost cause. The younger generation often moves to cities, and the rural areas see fewer and fewer residents. Those who seek the peace of the countryside often prefer to build new homes rather than restore old ones. But some places around the world have managed to keep their historic buildings intact, thanks largely to the flourishing tourism industry. One such gem is the Cotswolds in England—a true paradise for those who love the charm of the countryside. Let me introduce you to a house here that has stood strong since the 16th century. Over the years, it’s seen many owners. Right now, it’s owned by a couple from London—the husband runs a business, and the wife is an interior designer.
Homes in the Cotswolds rarely go on sale, and when they do, it’s big news because so many people dream of living in such a picturesque location. The area is known for its warm and friendly community. Even those who move away often return to admire the towns and soak in the beautiful scenery. When word spread that we had purchased the house, my mother received numerous emails from previous residents sharing their stories,” says the current owner. “One even mentioned that he had the happiest years of his life in this very house,” she added. “Former residents still occasionally visit, eager to reminisce about their time here.
Let’s take a look inside this enchanting home. We start in the kitchen, which also serves as the dining area. It’s decorated in lively, rich colors—from the kitchen cabinets painted in a lush green to the vibrant decorative plates on the walls. Everything is chosen carefully to add to the cozy atmosphere, including the textiles like tablecloths, rugs, and upholstery.
There is also a delightful collection of pitchers that catch the eye. While all the furniture has a vintage look, the homeowner has handpicked fabrics to reupholster the sofas and armchairs, breathing new life into these antique pieces with modern flair.
The transition from the living room to the kitchen is seamless. The walls showcase paintings by the previous owner, along with watercolor artworks from the current owner’s great-great-grandmother.
The children’s room, where the couple’s two daughters sleep, has a lovely mix of bedding, table lamps, and decorative plates, creating a comfortable, harmonious space.
In the parents’ bedroom on the first floor, there’s a bench by the bed that the homeowner’s mother painted, adding a personal touch.
This home also features a guest room, complete with an antique French bedspread—a treasured item in the room.
And what about the washroom?
Aside from the guest bathroom you saw earlier, there’s a full bathroom with a large, luxurious bathtub.
And that wraps up our tour! What do you think? Did this house enchant you? Do you think the bright colors and patterns suit it well?
