Milwaukee Police shared that the 25-year-old officer involved has been placed on routine administrative duty.
An 18-year-old pregnant woman suffered life-threatening injuries and lost her unborn baby after being shot by police in Wisconsin during a pursuit linked to carjackings.
On Thursday, June 20, Milwaukee Police officers tried to stop a vehicle around 2:23 p.m. at N. 17th Street and W. Vliet Street. The vehicle was connected to two armed robbery carjackings, according to the department’s Facebook post.
While chasing the vehicle on Interstate 43, it got stuck in a construction lane among barriers and a cement truck. Officers instructed the suspects to get out of the car, but instead, the driver reversed, hitting a marked police car.
The suspect attempted to drive away but reversed again, prompting an officer to shoot into the vehicle, hitting two of the six suspects inside. Along with the pregnant 18-year-old, a 17-year-old boy also suffered serious injuries. Both were taken to local hospitals.
The other suspects, aged 15 to 18, had minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Milwaukee Police mentioned the involved officer, who has four years of service, will be placed on administrative duty as is customary in officer-involved shootings.
A firearm was found in the stolen vehicle, but it wasn’t clear if any of the suspects had fired shots during the incident.
A local woman told WISN at the scene that while she was unsure who shot first, she definitely heard shots.
The victims of the two carjackings that prompted the chase were unharmed, occurring earlier on N. Broadway and N. Jefferson Street.
Police Chief Jeffrey Norman emphasized the seriousness of the situation, urging parents and the community to address unacceptable behaviors among the youth.
