A baby moose found itself in a precarious situation after falling into a lake but was thankfully rescued by some kind-hearted heroes.
Early Friday morning, Spencer Warren arrived for work at Destination Alaska Adventure Co in Homer, Alaska, when he heard an animal in distress.
Curious and concerned, he investigated and discovered a young moose calf in Beluga Lake. The poor calf was stuck between the floats of a floatplane and the dock, slipping repeatedly on the metal surface.
“It’s like an ice rink for the moose and its hooves,” Spencer explained. “So he just kept slipping and slipping and could not get up.”
Seeing the calf in distress, the tour company promptly contacted the local police, who quickly devised a rescue plan. However, the situation had a significant complication: the calf’s mother was nearby. Mother moose are highly protective of their young and can seriously harm humans if they perceive a threat.
Spencer mentioned that an officer from the Homer Police Department skillfully distracted the mother moose, allowing the team to save her baby. An officer strategically positioned their police cruiser between the mother and baby, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
The rescuers managed to pull the calf out of the water and helped it regain its footing. Once safely on dry land, the calf eagerly ran to reunite with its mother.
“Thankfully, he wasn’t moving much, which made the rescue a bit easier,” Spencer shared. “We just lifted him straight out and put him on the dock.”
Spencer and the Homer Police Department later shared the heartwarming rescue video on Facebook.
“Sometimes you really get to do something important in life,” the department wrote. “Our hats are off to Officers Morgan Tracy and Charles Lee who helped rescue a moose calf from sure demise early this morning.”
What an incredible rescue! A huge thank you to everyone who played a part in saving this young moose!
