The pair broke up in April 2023 after six years of dating
Joe Alwyn is speaking out for the first time about his breakup with Taylor Swift. The actor shared his thoughts in an interview published on June 15 by The Sunday Times Style. Reflecting on their relationship, Alwyn described it as “long, loving” and “fully committed.”
When asked about Swift’s latest album, which some fans speculate is inspired by their breakup, Alwyn emphasized empathy. He expressed, “I would think and hope that anyone and everyone can empathize… This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but just thinking about what I want to talk about.”
Alwyn went on to discuss the challenges of ending a significant relationship, saying, “I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years. That is a hard thing to navigate.”
Swift and Alwyn broke up in April 2023 after six years of dating, coinciding with the start of Swift’s Eras Tour. At the time, a source indicated that personality differences played a significant role in their separation.
Addressing the public nature of their breakup, Alwyn remarked, “What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.” He pointed out the difficulty of dealing with private matters in the limelight, adding, “So you have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition.”
Alwyn and Swift had mutually decided to keep their relationship private. He stated, “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.”
Alwyn shared that he is currently in a good place, both personally and professionally. However, he refrained from discussing his current dating life or if he is still in contact with Swift. “I’m sure you can appreciate, given the level of noise and scrutiny about my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to things like that right now,” he said.
