This year, the fires caused injuries to 25 people and left significant damage behind. Tragically, devastating fires struck Portugal in June and October of last year, claiming 114 lives. The sacrifice of the firefighters is apparent as they bravely contend with such dangerous conditions.
After an exhausting 24-hour shift, these gallant men and women took a well-deserved 25-minute break by the river. Despite the dense smoke hovering above, they found solace in the peaceful surroundings. This poignant image captures a brief respite amid their heroic efforts.

It’s important to highlight the challenging conditions that firefighters face. This year’s heat wave reached a scorching 116 degrees Fahrenheit on August 5th. In response, thirteen planes and additional firefighters were dispatched to combat the blaze. The situation was so dire that 160 soldiers had to assist with evacuations.
Despite the tragedy during this year’s fireworks display, where some firefighters lost their lives or were seriously injured, their courage is unmistakable. Although efforts were made to prevent a repeat of last year’s disaster, the fire proved to be unconquerable. Prime Minister Antonio Costa acknowledged the heroic efforts of the firefighters, stating that despite their best efforts, they ultimately faced insurmountable challenges.
