These days, it feels like no matter what you do as a parent, someone is bound to criticize you for it. Spoil your child with gifts? You’re overindulging them. Discipline them in public? You’re too harsh. Don’t kiss and cuddle them? They might grow up emotionally distant. Show too much affection? You’re doing it wrong, according to naysayers.
Finding the right balance as a parent can be tricky. Now imagine being a celebrity, where every family moment is under the microscope for millions of fans worldwide.
Personally, I don’t think there’s such a thing as being too affectionate with your kids. Showing them love and being there for a hug when they need it is always a good thing in my book.
Yet, former soccer star David Beckham is currently facing criticism for what some online voices have deemed overly affectionate behavior with his 12-year-old daughter, Harper, at a recent soccer game.
Many readers might recall that Beckham previously faced unfounded backlash for kissing his daughter on the lips. Frankly, we didn’t think he deserved any criticism then either.
This latest episode happened when David and Harper attended an Inter Miami game, a Major League Soccer club that David co-owns. Cameras captured a tender moment when David knelt beside Harper and lovingly wrapped his arms around her waist.
While many people appreciated the adorable father-daughter interaction, some online critics deemed it inappropriate.
One person commented, “I find that picture a bit cringe-worthy.”
Another added, “Yes, put an arm on her shoulder but that picture’s definitely OTT (over the top) for me.”
A third wrote, “She’s 13 this year; it’s time to let her be a bit older and stop clinging to her in public. Save the hugs for home.”
Another comment read, “As sweet and innocent as it may be, it’s no longer appropriate anymore. Harper looks like a young woman now.”
As we mentioned earlier, we don’t see anything wrong with a parent showing affection to their child, regardless of their age. Of course, certain boundaries should always be respected, but we just don’t believe David crossed any here.
