Sad news from Al Roker as he shares the passing of his dear Pepper, adopted in 2012. “Our hearts are heavy”

Sad news from Al Roker today: his beloved rescue dog Pepper has passed away. The longtime Today weatherman shared this touching update along with a heartfelt tribute on social media.

Roker announced that Pepper passed away yesterday and included a slideshow of photos capturing the joyful moments they shared over the years.

Like many grieving pet owners, Roker expressed his sadness at Pepper’s passing but also shared his gratitude for the wonderful years they had together.

“12 years ago, this sweet little girl named Pepper changed our lives,” recalled Roker. “Yesterday, we had to say goodbye. While our hearts are heavy, they are also fuller because of all the love she bestowed on everyone who got to meet her.”

Roker and his wife, journalist Deborah Roberts, adopted Pepper from a Pennsylvania shelter back in 2012.

Over the years, Pepper wasn’t just loved by her family; she became a fan favorite, often making appearances on Roker’s social media pages.

The cause of Pepper’s passing was not specified, though Pepper did undergo emergency surgery last month. During this time, Roker missed an episode of Today to be by Pepper’s side as she recuperated; her recovery was met with an outpouring of prayers and support from fans.

Deborah Roberts shared at the time, “We are grateful for any and all prayers for our sweet doggie who has stolen our hearts for 12 years now.”

During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Pepper provided some memorable moments for many fans. Appearing on Today as Roker reported from home, Pepper offered a sense of comfort and joy.

Roker joked, “Pepper says she wants to lick your face, but will do it socially distant,” while the dog sat in his lap.

Anchor Hoda Kotb replied, “Watching you pet that dog makes me feel better.”

Our hearts are with Al Roker and his family as they mourn their sweet dog 💔😢 Please share this story in memory of Pepper.
