Some Parents Are Calling For “Old School” Discipline In Classrooms

There’s a rising debate among parents and educators about the importance of reinstating traditional discipline methods in classrooms. This conversation intensified after a senate inquiry into classroom behaviors suggested that old-school disciplinary approaches could be the key to managing disruptive student behavior.

Nationwide Implementation of Traditional Discipline Guidelines

To combat classroom disruption, new nationwide guidelines have been introduced. These emphasize basic behaviors such as how students should enter classrooms, sit properly, and respectfully ask questions. Classrooms are encouraged to have desks arranged in rows facing the teacher to maintain order. Additionally, students practice ‘super walking’ to ensure they move in an orderly manner throughout school. These steps aim to foster a disciplined and conducive learning environment.

Research-Driven Need for Discipline

This approach is supported by research from the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO), which found that teachers spend about 20% of their time handling disruptive behavior. Dr. Jenny Donavan, CEO of AERO, highlighted that teaching appropriate behavior is essential for academic success.

The Perspective of a Principal

Former principal Tracy Tully believes that teaching discipline is basic and should be a standard practice in every school. “This will definitely work – the very first thing that needs to happen when teaching a lesson is that the teachers are there on time, they line the kids up outside the classroom and tell them what they’re going to do and how they should enter,” she said. Tully emphasized the importance of supporting schools so they can implement these measures effectively.

Voices from the Educational Community

Dr. Donavan stressed that consistency in teaching these behaviors throughout a student’s education is key. She pointed out that these skills are vital for classroom management and overall student success.

Parental Perspectives

Parents too have shared their views, with some blaming the lack of discipline at home as the root cause of classroom issues. Others support stricter school disciplinary measures, believing that it helps address disrespectful and unruly behavior among students. “I think you need to cane the parents, to be honest. That’s where it is at for me. Kids are a product of their mum and dad or their parents… discipline starts at home,” one parent said. “They need to be taught to listen and learn to take direction. Just no respect (in the classroom). That’s the biggest problem,” another added.

Expert Opinions on Balanced Approaches

Former principal Adam Voigt highlighted the need for consistency and cautioned against relying solely on punitive measures. He recommended a balanced approach that combines modern teaching methods with traditional discipline.

Towards a Balanced Solution

The debate continues, and it’s clear that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to classroom disruption. The goal is to find a harmonious blend of modern teaching techniques and traditional disciplinary measures. A supportive learning environment that encourages respect and responsibility is essential. As educators, parents, and policymakers navigate this challenge, collaboration and open conversation will be crucial in shaping the future of education.
