Good style never truly goes out of fashion. If you have a classic sense of style, your clothing can be cherished for generations!
This delightful story reveals how a grandmother preserved her honeymoon wardrobe in immaculate condition, and her granddaughter managed to wear it with the same grace nearly 70 years later!
Maddy Bill, a 27-year-old from Ambler, Pennsylvania, shared an enchanting video on her TikTok account, showcasing a suitcase given to her by her 91-year-old grandmother, Marie D’Alessandro Donato.
The suitcase holds a treasure trove of history. Inside, there are dresses her grandmother wore during her 1952 honeymoon trip to New York. Remarkably, Maddy is the first person to open the suitcase in seven decades!
Marie meticulously cleaned each piece after her honeymoon with her late husband, Anthony James Donato, to safely pass it down to her children and grandchildren. Her effort paid off; people worldwide are now appreciating her timeless wardrobe.
“I’ve known about this suitcase since I was a child. My mom found it when she was older and saved it for me and my sister until we were old enough,” Maddy shared in an interview.
She continued, “When I opened it, I was like, ‘This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.’ It brought back so many memories, especially of my grandparents. My grandfather passed away 21 years ago, so it was nostalgic to relive that part of their lives.”
Her grandparents, the Donatos, got married in 1952 and spent their honeymoon in New York City, exploring Manhattan and staying at places like The New Yorker Hotel.
“She told me, ‘I didn’t care about anything because I was with my honey’ — that’s what she called my pop pop,” Maddy recalled. “She had a fantastic time living her dream life and starting a family with him.”
Encouraged by hundreds of comments on her video, Maddy decided to try on the gowns and jewelry her grandmother had worn.
To her delight, everything fit perfectly. Maddy marveled at the impeccable condition of the clothing.
“It’s incredible how well-preserved everything is. Even the elastic in some pieces is still springy after 70 years,” she noted.
First up, she modeled a short-sleeved, waist-cinching black dress that had fascinated her since childhood. She always noticed a picture of her grandmother wearing this dress at The New Yorker Hotel, sparking her curiosity.
She also tried on an elegant gray jacket, skirt, and sleeveless top that her grandmother wore on the train to the big city. Clearly, fashion sense runs in the family!
Maddy feels honored to bring a piece of her grandmother’s history to the world and showcase the kind of woman she was.
Maddy shared, “I told my grandma about how popular her style has become and how much people admire it.”
“I want to save these pieces for someone special, maybe my future child, so they can experience it just like I did. I don’t want it to just be something worn now; it should be treasured for the future, like my grandmother did for me,” she said.
