Boxing Champ Andrew Tham Dead at 28 After Motorcycle Crash

Featherweight boxing champion Andrew Tham has tragically passed away following a motorcycle accident last week.

Tham, 28, was riding his beloved Kawasaki motorcycle when he collided with a Hyundai Tucson on Thursday, May 30 in Cumbernauld, Scotland. He was immediately taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where, sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, June 2.

Fans and the boxing community are in mourning, recalling his dynamic personality and prowess in the ring.

The St. Andrew’s Sporting Club, which managed Tham throughout his professional career, posted a heartfelt tribute on X (previously known as Twitter) acknowledging their grief.

“Andy was a champion in the ring, and a character out of the ring. It has been an honour to have him in our stable for the entirety of his professional boxing career and he will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” the post read.

George Stewart, who recently battled Tham in the ring only a month ago, shared his sorrow and admiration. He expressed how devastated he was by the loss and how it truly was an honor to have competed against such a true warrior. “It was an absolute honour and a pleasure to share the ring with him two weeks ago — a true warrior. I have no words to describe this devastating news other than heart breaking,” Stewart commented.

Tham kicked off his professional boxing career in 2019 and quickly soared to fame. In September 2023, he clinched the featherweight championship title, a defining highlight of his career, during the undercard of a match featuring Scottish boxers Ricky Burns and Willie Limond.

Tham’s death comes on the heels of another tragic loss in the boxing world. British boxer Sherif Lawal, aged 29, passed away on May 12 after sustaining a head injury in his professional debut. Competing at the Harrow Leisure Centre in London, Lawal suffered a fatal blow to the temple during his match against Portuguese opponent Malam Varela, as stated by Warren Boxing Management on their social media account.

Lawal’s match was the first of the event, and following the tragic incident, all subsequent fights were canceled, reported ESPN.
