Officer Jamal Mitchell was tragically shot and killed while trying to assist victims during a shooting on May 30.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department’s Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell, the officers responded to reports of a double shooting at the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South on May 30.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers were met with immediate gunfire. Officer Jamal Mitchell was injured during the exchange and was taken to HCMC hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Assistant Chief Blackwell also mentioned that another officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident, and the suspect was declared dead on the scene despite attempts by officers to administer first aid.
Additionally, two adult victims with gunshot wounds were found at the location; one was pronounced dead, while the other was gravely injured.
Mayor Jacob Frey expressed his sorrow stating, “Today the city of Minneapolis lost a hero in police officer Jamal Mitchell. This officer made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and save others.” He described the loss as a devastating event for the city and hailed Mitchell as a courageous hero.
Mitchell was a father and engaged to be married. Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans noted, “This tragedy occurs far too often in Minnesota and it’s clear that changes are needed.”
Evans explained, “Officer Mitchell was rushing towards danger and answered a call for service. The first thing he did upon arriving was try to help victims, only to be ambushed.” An innocent bystander in the area was also critically injured about two blocks from the original call.
Authorities believe there was some level of acquaintance among the individuals in the apartment where the shooting occurred, though the motive is still under investigation. The Minneapolis Police Department has yet to respond to requests for further information.
Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar expressed her condolences on social media, stating, “Devastated to learn about the MPD officer killed and another critically injured this evening as they were working to keep our community safe. John and I are praying for their families and all those impacted by this tragedy.”
