3 Body Problem Will Run for 3 Seasons on Netflix, the Streamer Confirms

Netflix has finally confirmed: The popular science fiction series, 3 Body Problem, based on Liu Cixin’s award-winning book series, will wrap up after three seasons.

The announcement was made during a special FYSEE panel on May 31. So far, Netflix has aired just one season. Earlier this month, at a Netflix Upfront event in New York City, the creators shared their excitement about bringing viewers to the end of the universe with them.

The first season, consisting of eight episodes, starts in the tumultuous 1960s China, where a young astrophysicist named Zine Tseng makes a critical decision affecting the future. The story then leaps forward to the 21st century, focusing on a team of scientists and a detective working to prevent an event threatening to disrupt time and space itself.

Executive producer D.B. Weiss, who many will recognize from Game of Thrones, mentioned that while they loved many aspects from the first novel and included them in Season 1, the majority of their passion and excitement lies in Seasons 2 and 3. He expressed his thrill at getting the chance to complete the entire trilogy as intended.

Weiss, along with Alexander Woo from True Blood and David Benioff, are set to remain as executive producers, showrunners, and writers through the remaining seasons. Speaking about their creative journey, they shared their comprehensive roadmap for adapting the entire trilogy and ensuring its faithful conclusion.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Weiss detailed their commitment to the project, stating, “We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end. And we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started.”

David Benioff added, “By the time we finish with the show, it will be seven years we’ve devoted to it. We’re now at a place where we get to tell the rest of the story, and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to and that’s immensely gratifying.”

3 Body Problem has turned out to be one of Netflix’s most-watched series over the past year after its initial release on March 21. It spent an impressive seven weeks on Netflix’s global Top 10 list, further highlighting its popularity.

If you haven’t caught up yet, 3 Body Problem is available to stream now on Netflix. Make sure to join the journey and experience the thrilling sci-fi series that has captured the imagination of viewers worldwide.
