Having a dog is a lifelong commitment, yet too often, people give up their pets for trivial reasons, showing little concern for what happens to them afterward.
Recently, a rescue organization took in a dog abandoned at a shelter by his long-term owner. Their frustration was palpable as they declared they’re “sick and tired” of such situations.
This month, a 7-year-old male dog was taken to the Greenville Animal Control Shelter in Greenville, Texas, by his owner.
According to a Facebook post, the owner surrendered the dog because they were expecting a baby and felt they wouldn’t have enough time to give him the attention he needed.
The poor dog was suddenly removed from the only home he’s ever known, left facing an uncertain future. He now had to struggle to find a new family, with the added risk of being euthanized in the overcrowded shelter.
The rescue team couldn’t hide their anger about the situation, emphasizing that there was no valid reason for such abandonment. “This is what your dog’s face looks like after you’ve had him for 7 years, had a baby, and then discarded him at the shelter,” they wrote on Facebook.
“I always wonder if you felt bad while standing in line? Did you look back at him when you walked away? Did you see his confused face? Did you forget about him 5 minutes later? 10 minutes, maybe?”
“Was your house so much better now that the dog was gone, and you could finally peacefully raise your child? Can you tell how angry this makes me? I hope so. I hope you’re reading this and feeling at least a bit of pain.”
They shared that the dog, now named Rooney, was “suffering from diarrhea and stress,” but remained a sweet and gentle dog.
In later updates, they mentioned Rooney was still in isolation and “nervous while trying to come to terms with being abandoned by his owners,” though he was beginning to adjust.
Lone Star is determined to find Rooney a new forever home. “You are a senior now, but we will find you a home that won’t discard you because of a temporary change in their life.”
It’s heartbreaking that Rooney was given up by his owner, but we’re relieved he’s now in safe hands, and we hope he finds a new, loving home soon. 😢❤️
