Francis Ford Coppola had a charming companion with him as he premiered his latest film.

On Thursday, May 16, the 85-year-old director was seen at the Cannes premiere of his film Megalopolis, proudly posing beside his 17-year-old granddaughter, Romy Mars. Francis looked dapper in a black suit with a black bow tie, accentuated by a wooden cane and hat. Romy complemented her grandfather’s outfit with a sleeveless black dress and sparkly heels. They were photographed together walking the red carpet, and later, Romy was seen guiding her grandfather to his seat in the theater.

Francis’ daughter Sofia Coppola, 53, is Romy’s mother. Sofia also has another daughter, Cosima, 13, with her musician husband, Thomas Mars.

Romy is no stranger to the public eye. Earlier this year, in March, she posted a since-deleted TikTok video saying, “make a vodka pasta sauce with me because I’m grounded.” In the video, she humorously shared that she was grounded for attempting to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland using her dad’s credit card, simply because she wanted to have dinner with a friend from camp.

As Romy made her pasta sauce in the video, she explained that filming the TikTok was her way of passing time while grounded, noting her parents’ strict rule against having public social media accounts. Holding a Grammy award to the camera with a playful smile, she said, “Because they don’t want me to be a nepotism kid, but TikTok is not gonna make me famous, so it doesn’t really matter.”

In the same video, Romy introduced “Ari, my babysitter’s boyfriend,” and light-heartedly commented, “My parents are never home so these are my replacement parents.”

Sofia Coppola later spoke about Romy’s viral TikTok in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding her film Priscilla. “We were raised to be so private, and social media is so opposite of how I grew up,” she said. “So, it was the best way for her to be rebellious.”

Sofia added, “I got a lot of compliments on her filmmaking and comedy. She’s funny. But people discussing my parenting publicly is not what I would’ve hoped for.”
