The Plainville, Mass. man is looking for a home with no other pets and no small children for his dog of 10 years, Babs.
A Massachusetts man by the name of David Fine is searching for a loving new home for his beloved dog, Babs. David, who hails from Plainville, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and wants to make sure Babs is taken care of before he passes away.
He’s had Babs for over 10 years, ever since she was a puppy. Babs had already been rehomed twice, and David lovingly referred to himself as her “dad.” Before adopting her, David had sworn off getting another pet because losing them was too painful. Fortunately, Babs is likely to outlive him, giving him a bit of comfort in his final days.
David spent most of his life working as a carpenter. After retiring in 2020, he set out on a lifelong dream of traveling across the United States to visit national parks. He bought a truck and a camper and hit the road with Babs by his side, grinning from ear to ear during their time together.
During one of their adventures, they made a significant stop in South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore and then continued to Wyoming, where David started feeling unwell about 100 miles away from Yellowstone National Park.
David had previously battled leukemia and was later diagnosed with vascular disease. In August, doctors gave him the devastating news that he had stage four lung cancer, with an estimated life expectancy of only six months.
Choosing quality of life over aggressive treatment, David decided against undergoing chemotherapy, which, he feared, would make him constantly ill and unable to enjoy his remaining time.
Now, his focus is on finding a new home for Babs before he enters hospice care. David never married and has no children. His extended family is unable to take Babs in due to her specific needs – she needs a home without other pets and small children.
David has placed an ad in a local paper asking for the public’s help in finding Babs a new home. She is housebroken and well-mannered, making her a wonderful companion for the right person or family.
While David’s dream of visiting Yellowstone may go unfulfilled, his most urgent goal is to ensure Babs’s future is secure. He wants to be at peace knowing she will be cared for and loved even after he is no longer around.
“Everybody dies; there are things I wanted to get done. I still want to see Yellowstone. I don’t think I’ll make it there at this point; financially it would be tough. Other than that, I need to do this for her,” David shared. “Then I can rest in peace when the time comes, but I’m not ready to go yet.”
He added, “… She’s the most important thing at this point. My fate is sealed, but hers is not. I have to make sure she gets as many good years out of the rest of her life as I can.”
