Being in a shelter for an extended period can deeply affect a dog. Many shelters witness once joyful and hopeful dogs lose their spirits after months of being passed over.

This is the tale of Major, an Indiana shelter dog, who has been “crying endlessly” for more than 260 days after being forsaken by his previous family. Despite this, the shelter staff maintain hope, believing there is a perfect family out there for him.

Major is a 4-year-old terrier/pitbull mix under the care of the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana.

He was picked up as a stray last summer. The shelter staff discovered he had a microchip, which allowed them to contact his original owners. Sadly, these owners promised to collect him but never showed up.

Since then, Major has been in the shelter. Despite this heartbreak, Major initially remained in good spirits. The humane society described him as a “sweet and sensitive” dog, a “true companion with a big heart” who loves to play and adores his Jolly Ball.

The staff affectionately called him a handsome boy, with nicknames like “Major hunk” and “Major heartthrob.” Unfortunately, these qualities were overlooked, and months passed without anyone adopting Major.

The continuous rejection has dampened Major’s once bright spirit.

“His spunky personality is dimming,” the humane society shared on Facebook. “This once jolly ball-lovin’ boy now sits in his room and cries endlessly.”

To alleviate his stress, the shelter has moved him from the kennels to a visiting room. However, they understand that the only true solution is for Major to find a forever home swiftly.

Major would thrive best in a family without young children or cats. While he can get along with other dogs, he sometimes doesn’t know his own strength, so a meet-and-greet is encouraged.

Although not every home might be suitable for Major, there must be a family out there perfect for this delightful and lively dog. “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, Major is the one for you!” his adoption page states.
