Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick: Inside their love story

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are renowned stars, each with a substantial career. And it’s quite heartwarming to realize that they’ve been married for over 30 years.

Kyra first met Kevin when she was just 12 years old, with Kevin being seven years older than her. She had gone to see a movie with her brother, which starred Bacon, and then met him afterwards.

It wasn’t until a decade later on the set of Lemon Sky that their paths crossed again. Kyra admitted that Bacon wasn’t really her type initially.

“He definitely wasn’t my type. In fact, I vividly remember looking at his butt when he walked away after we first met and thinking, ‘Well, I guess some girls like that,’” Kyra revealed to Wide Open Country.

But she eventually saw something special in him, and the two were married the following year in 1988.

They had a private ceremony in Connecticut and a lavish reception for 300 guests at Manhattan’s Au Bar. Kevin and Kyra, who got engaged on Christmas Eve in 1987, only invited close friends and family to their reception.

Their Children

Shortly after the wedding, they welcomed their first child, Travis Sedgwick Bacon. Their daughter, Sosie Ruth, was born in 1992.

Sosie has followed in her parents’ footsteps and starred as Skye Miller in the Netflix drama “13 Reasons Why.” Travis is a solo musician and has even composed music for his parents’ movie, Story of a Girl.

Now, 34 years later, the couple is celebrating their anniversary and couldn’t be happier. Their enduring marriage is quite the rarity in Hollywood.

“If someone had told me at 22 that I was going to meet the man I would marry and at 23 I’d have a child, I would have told them they were out of their mind,” Kyra told Redbook in 2008.

Bacon still seems deeply in love with his wife and makes sure to celebrate their anniversaries. Both Kevin and Kyra post heartfelt declarations of love on their Instagram accounts.

However, their romance hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

“The time I was hitting what I considered to be bottom was also the time I met my wife, our kids were born, good things were happening. And I was able to keep supporting myself; that always gave me strength”, Bacon told reporters.

Financial Struggles

The couple faced significant challenges, including losing their life savings in Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme in 2008.

Reports suggest they lost between $30-$100 million, but despite losing millions, they maintained their composure as they both had jobs that helped them survive the financial hit.

“It was a bad day,” Bacon told The Guardian. “But pretty quickly we were able to see all the things we had as opposed to what we lost. Children, health, love, a nice home. So we got through it together. I don’t think about Madoff, like, at all.”

Family Ties

On the U.S. TV show “Finding Your Roots,” Kyra discovered that she and Bacon are distant cousins.

A DNA test revealed that the couple were ninth cousins, once removed. Although it’s a bit startling, Kevin wasn’t too thrilled about the discovery.

Kyra mentioned she had a feeling they were related but mentioned it was unsettling. She added that she was okay with the information as long as they weren’t first cousins.

When PBS investigated Kevin’s ancestry, they discovered that King Edward I, who battled William Wallace, was his 22nd great-grandfather. Kevin joked that his ancestry went unnoticed even after discovering that he and Kyra were related.

“I kind of felt like it was a joke at my expense, you know,” he said. However, despite the surprising discovery, their love has only grown stronger each year.

Love During Quarantine

Recently, they’ve had more time to spend together due to quarantine at their LA home.

“I’m doing a little writing, even though I honestly don’t know if I’m any good at it,” Kyra told People.

“It’s about finding something to do. I don’t spend time with my husband reading Shakespeare, but we’re watching a lot of stuff and reading. I’m trying to touch into my work daily for sure.”

Kyra also shares how her husband always makes her feel special.

“I don’t know how he does it, but he always makes me feel like I’m the most beautiful woman in the room – the only girl in the room,” Kyra told People.

She attributes their enduring spark to their physical intimacy.

“Sex is really important. That desire is there,” Sedgwick shared with Redbook in 2012.

Bacon offered some advice on marriage in a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly: “Whatever you do, don’t listen to celebrities on advice on how to stay married.”

As for his wife, Sedgwick once shared with Good Housekeeping what she loves about Kevin.

“He is so honorable. He is ethically true. He has high moral standards, and he doesn’t lie or cheat—I find that sexy!” she said. “I am constantly in awe of Kevin’s levelheadedness and his lack of ‘crazy.’”
