Candace Cameron Bure Talks About Her Battle With Depression

Candace Cameron Bure is opening up about her struggle with mental health and the “shame” she feels as a result.

During the latest episode of her podcast, the Full House star opened up about how her struggle with mental health has left her feeling “so shameful and so lonely.” And how hard it’s been to find the courage to ask for help.

“[Depression] is such a lonely place and it’s very difficult to speak out about it, even to your most trusted people,” Bure admitted as she cried. “It’s hard to admit it, at least for me, I feel like because I should be strong enough to overcome that and then it just feels weak. It just feels so weak. And the perception of that.”

Understanding Perceptions of Mental Health

As Candace Cameron Bure continued, she talked about how other people’s perception of mental health and depression made her feel that way. “There are a lot of people who feel that it’s weak and will verbalize that, so then it’s just immediate shame that you’re like, ‘Oh, well if I struggle with this then I’m weak person.’”

But while the mom of three said she’s tried to pull herself out of it, she knows she can’t do it alone and she knows she needs to ask for help.

“So many times when I’m like, ‘I don’t want to feel this way.’ I can try with all of my might to get out of this and I can’t pull myself out of the pit. I can’t pull myself out by myself. But it’s hard to extend the arm and go, ‘Help me,’” Bure explains further.

After sharing the emotional clip on Instagram, she urged her followers with similar thoughts and feeling to know “you are not alone!”

“If you struggle with sadness or depression, please know you are not alone,” Bure wrote on Instagram. “PSALM 34:17-18 says, ‘When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.’”

Several people in the comments section of her Instagram post thanked Bure for her honesty. “Such an important thing to admit outloud. Thank you. Love your bravery to speak truth,” one commenter wrote.

“There is nothing stronger than someone who has the bravery to talk about this,” another added.
