Michael opens up about his friendship with Kelly Ripa years after leaving their show.

Michael Strahan, a former defensive end for the New York Giants, transitioned to television after retiring from football.

The Houston native rose to prominence as a football analyst on Fox NFL Sunday before co-hosting the syndicated morning talk show Live! with Kelly and Michael. He is currently the presenter of Good Morning America, and his split with Kelly Ripa appears acrimonious.

Ripa was so taken aback when he decided to leave Live! She took a week off from the show with Kelly and Michael to regroup.

“I needed a few days to collect my thoughts; after 26 years with this organization, I earned the right,” Ripa explained to her audience. “(This) sparked a much larger discussion about professional communication, consideration, and, most importantly, respect… “Please accept my apologies.”

Strahan and Ripa won a Daytime Emmy for “Outstanding Talk Show Host” twice, and their ratings rose during his stint on the show.

Strahan disclosed his relationship with Ripa six years after he left the show, saying they don’t talk anymore. Their relationship, he claims, never healed when he left the show.

“I learned through all of that, you can’t convince people to like you,” he stated in an interview with Time. “I haven’t talked to her in ages.”

Strahan has already hinted that relations between him and Ripa behind the scenes weren’t always pleasant.

“I remained the same person I was from Day 1. One thing I will not do is change my attitude to accommodate someone else’s. I learned a lot from Kelly and (executive producer) Michael Gelman.

When it was time to leave, it was time to leave. Certain things behind the scenes caught up with me,” he told Deadline.
