Sky Castner, 18, has overcome tremendous adversity to achieve something truly remarkable – she has gained admission to the prestigious Harvard University. What makes her journey even more extraordinary is the fact that she was born in a prison, the Galveston County Jail, and has faced numerous challenges throughout her life. But through determination and unwavering belief in herself, Sky has defied all expectations and emerged as a shining example of resilience and perseverance.
A Single Parent’s Love and Sacrifice
From the moment Sky’s father picked her up from the jail to raise her as a single parent, her mother, who was incarcerated at the time of her birth, played no significant role in her life. Despite the setbacks of frequent relocations, Sky’s father has been a pillar of support, ensuring that she never wavered in her determination to pursue a higher education. Their bond and the love and sacrifice of a single parent have laid the foundation for Sky’s success.
A Remarkable Academic Journey

Teachers at Reaves Elementary recognized her potential and provided her with additional mentoring through CISD’s Project Mentor. It was through this program that she met Mona Hamby, who became her mentor and played a significant role in shaping Sky’s future.

It was through Mona’s dedication and belief in Sky that she was given the tools to reach for the stars.
A Life-Changing Visit to Harvard
Sky’s interest in attending Harvard grew after a visit to the campus with Mona and her husband in 2022. Inspired by the surroundings and captivated by the possibilities, Sky sought advice from Professor James Wallace of Boston University on how to make her application stand out. With his guidance, she was able to effectively convey her unique story and experiences to the admissions committee.
