Nick and I promised Sophia that if she used the potty every day for a month, she could select a special treat from Target. Naturally, she chose a new doll, as she’s absolutely enchanted by them lately.
While we were waiting at the checkout, the cashier struck up a conversation, curiously asking about Sophia’s upcoming birthday party plans. We exchanged puzzled glances. It turned out the cashier was referring to the doll, assuming it was for a gift.
Seeing Sophia’s blank expression, I mentioned that the doll was a special reward for her being potty trained. The cashier seemed baffled and again asked Sophia, “Are you certain this is the doll you want, sweetheart?”
Sophia finally spoke up, “Yes please!” But the cashier persisted, saying, “But this doll doesn’t look like you. We have a lot more dolls that resemble you better.”
My temper flared for a moment, but Sophia interrupted casually, “Yes, she does! She’s a doctor, just like I’m going to be one day. And she’s pretty, just like I am! Look at her beautiful hair and see her stethoscope?” Thankfully, the cashier backed off and commented, “Oh, that’s wonderful.”
