Joaquin Phoenix recently made headlines after stepping away from a film project known for its bold and explicit content, mere days before it was slated to begin filming. Details on his decision are scarce, but speculation suggests a potential reason for his hasty withdrawal.
Back in May 2023, director Todd Haynes shared that he and Phoenix collaborated on a period gay romance alongside Jonathan Raymond. This was to be Haynes’ next directorial venture.

Haynes explained, “The upcoming film, an original script developed with ideas from Joaquin, was co-written by Joaquin Phoenix, Jonathan Raymond, and myself. We all share the story credit.”
Phoenix, known for his daring roles, motivated Haynes to take on bold themes. “Joaquin encouraged me to push boundaries, urging, ‘No, let’s go further,’” Haynes recalled.

The film, set to be an NC-17-rated story set in 1930s Los Angeles, was centered on a gay love affair.
During the U.S. premiere of “May December” in September 2023, Haynes shared updates about the film’s progress, noting the script was finalized just before the industry strike.
Phoenix had significantly shaped the storytelling, with Haynes lauding his boldness and eagerness to delve into the complex layers of relationships.

Plans were for production to start in Mexico once Phoenix’s schedule cleared up. The story aimed to follow his character and his lover as they escape to Mexico.
Despite being prepared for production, Phoenix unexpectedly dropped his involvement just five days before filming was to begin in Guadalajara, Mexico, remaining in Los Angeles, while causing the project to dissolve in July 2024.

Phoenix’s untimely exit strained relationships, leaving financiers and crew unprepared for the financial setbacks, which reportedly amounted to more than a million dollars.
The actor recently made a public appearance at a press conference during the Venice Film Festival to promote “Joker: Folie à Deux,” where he reprises his Oscar-winning role.
An attendee of the event described Phoenix’s lively demeanor upon entering the room full of journalists.
Phoenix, displaying an unexpectedly open persona, was addressed about his film withdrawal but chose not to share specifics, “If I did, it would just be from my viewpoint,” he said, avoiding further elaboration.
Online, many supported Phoenix’s decision. “I stand by his decision, and wish them well,” commented one Facebook user. “Respect to him for making the right call!” echoed another.

Although Phoenix didn’t cite specific reasons for exiting the project, those close speculate “cold feet” played a part. Neither Phoenix nor Killer Films commented on the matter.
Sources indicated Haynes wanted the film to feature explicit scenes, marking it Phoenix’s inaugural gay role on film. At present, a recast is not in the cards, as stakeholders focus on resolving financial commitments made with international distributors.
