12-year-old Runs to Get Help After Mom Has Seizure While Driving

A 12-year-old boy played a heroic role when he flagged down a police officer after his mother experienced a seizure while driving and ended up in a pond.

Police bodycam footage reveals the intense rescue of Jonquetta Winbush, a Texas mom, along with her two kids, Bri-Asia (16) and Dwight (12), on July 24 in West Orange, Texas.

“She’s having a seizure! She’s stuck! She’s in the water, help her!” Dwight is heard saying in the video clip.

West Orange Officer Charles Cobb, along with several good Samaritans, rushed to the scene. They found a gray car partially submerged with Winbush inside.

Winbush’s sister, Bevnisha Holman, shared that Dwight managed to swim out of the car and the pond before running to get help.

“My nephew swam out to my niece, who instructed him to call for help,” Holman recounted.

Officer Cobb, hearing Dwight’s cries, grabbed a tool to break the car’s window, with good Samaritans like Epifanio Munguia joining in the rescue efforts.

“Realizing the urgency, I pulled over and jumped into the water,” Munguia said.

The rescuers managed to break the car’s back window, but it started sinking.

“As we opened the door, I heard someone say ‘I got her,’ and it felt like winning the lottery,” said Munguia.

The rescuers pulled an unconscious Winbush out of the water. Without a pulse and not breathing, Officer Cobb administered CPR for several minutes.

“Holding her hand, I felt life returning,” said Munguia.

Winbush is now recovering in the hospital. After spending over three weeks on a ventilator, she is breathing on her own and getting stronger, according to Holman.

The family is deeply grateful for the quick response of the rescuers.

“They didn’t hesitate; they stepped up when my sister, niece, and nephew needed them the most,” Holman expressed.

The city of West Orange honored Officer Cobb and the good Samaritans with a life-saving award on August 13.
