Sahar Tabar, also known as Fatemeh Khishvand, is a 19-year-old Iranian woman who gained attention by undergoing numerous plastic surgeries to resemble Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. Her story sparked controversy and debate online, earning her the nickname “Iran’s Zombie Angelina Jolie.” After a sentence of ten years, Sahar Tabar has been released from jail.
Striving to Transform
Tabar underwent more than 50 surgeries as she aimed to enhance her appearance. While she did not explicitly state that she wanted to look like Angelina Jolie, her fans certainly made the connection. Sahar showcased her altered features through photos on social media, with gaunt cheekbones, plumped and angular lips, and a noticeably different nose. However, there is speculation surrounding the authenticity of these surgeries, as some believe the images may have been heavily edited or digitally altered.
Unexpected Fame and Online Presence
Sahar Tabar gained popularity on social media by posting pictures of her unique and unconventional appearance. At one point, her Instagram account had nearly four million followers under the handle @sahartabar official, which has since been removed. While her mother disapproved of her social media use and the shocking images resembling Angelina Jolie, Sahar desired fame and found cyberspace a convenient way to express herself and gain attention.
A Form of Art and Self-Expression
In an interview with the Russian website Sputnik, Sahar Tabar explained that her intention was never to look exactly like Angelina Jolie. “Every time I publish a photo, I paint my face in an increasingly funny way,” she said. “My fans know this is not my true face. I didn’t even think about looking like Jolie. I also didn’t want to look like the cartoon character, the Corpse Bride. Now I realize I have something to do with them, but I am a muse, and remembering someone is not an end.”
Controversy and Imprisonment
Tabar’s story left many confused and intrigued. However, her journey took a darker turn when she was arrested in October 2019 for allegedly posting blasphemous Instagram photos. She faced additional charges such as illegally purchasing property, inciting violence, negatively influencing youth, earning money through unethical means, and violating the country’s strict dress code for women. As a young woman, Sahar Tabar received an unexpectedly long sentence of ten years and was imprisoned in Qarchak, known as the country’s harshest prison for women.
The Cry for Help and Release
In response to Sahar’s case, Iranian activist Masih Alinejad took to social media, calling upon Angelina Jolie for support. Alinejad highlighted Tabar’s young age and the plea from her desperate mother for her release. “Angelina Jolie, we need your opinion. Please assist us,” Alinejad pleaded. The activist’s message aimed to shed light on the challenging situation Sahar Tabar faced and gain the attention needed for her liberation.
Freedom at Last
After 14 months in prison, Sahar Tabar has finally been released. This development comes in the wake of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, who was recently arrested and brutally beaten by Iranian police for improperly wearing her hijab. While Sahar’s unique story continues to capture the attention of many, her release brings a glimmer of hope and relief to those following her journey.
