K9s are truly remarkable dogs. Not only do they provide invaluable services to police departments, but they also leave a lasting impression on their fellow officers, forming unbreakable bonds.

That’s beautifully portrayed in a heartwarming video where a police dog appears to cry after reuniting with her former handler for the first time in years.

This touching video was originally posted on a Chinese social media platform by the Xichuan Police Department. According to the Daily Star, Wangwang, an 8-year-old German shepherd, served as a sniffer dog for the police before retiring in June 2019.

Although Wangwang deserved a well-earned retirement and was well cared for, it sadly meant she had to part ways with her former partner and handler.

She missed him immensely — so when her handler decided to pay her a surprise visit after a long separation, Wangwang was overjoyed and ran straight to him.

The old friends had a heartwarming reunion. The officer lovingly rubs and pets Wangwang, who appears to be in tears, overwhelmed by joy.

Even though they hadn’t seen each other for quite some time and had gone their separate ways, the bond between this officer and his dog remained strong. “Wangwang’s hair is turning white, but she is well-fed and even getting chubby,” read the original video caption.

“It’s always hard to bid farewell to your buddy.”

While many K9s and other working dogs get to live with their handlers post-retirement, enjoying their golden years with someone they love and trust, the Xichuan Police explained that their officers often don’t have the time to care for retired dogs. Instead, these dedicated dogs are taken in by loving families.

It’s indeed sad that Wangwang and her handler had to part ways after forming such a strong bond on the job, but judging from Wangwang’s expression, it’s clear that this visit won’t be the last from her old friend.
