Mechanic Dead After Being Sucked into Plane’s Engine While Trying to Retrieve Tool: Reports

Iran’s aviation authority is now reportedly investigating the incident.

Tragedy struck at Iran’s Chabahar Konarak Airport when a mechanic, Abolfazl Amiri, lost his life in a shocking accident. Reports from Sky News Australia, TMZ, and German outlet Bild reveal that Amiri, while performing routine maintenance on a Varesh Airlines Boeing 737-500, was sucked into the plane’s engine.

Witnesses state that at the time of the incident, the plane’s right engine was turned on for a test and the cover flaps were open. Despite a safety area being set up around the engine, things took a tragic turn when Amiri tried to retrieve a tool near the engine, leading to his unfortunate demise.

The plane’s engine reportedly caught fire following the incident, but the flames were quickly extinguished. Amiri’s remains were recovered, and an investigation by Iran’s aviation authority is underway.

This tragic event comes on the heels of another similar incident in May, where a KLM passenger at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport was pulled into a plane’s engine. Authorities later deduced that the individual intentionally climbed into the engine. These events highlight the incredible risks involved in aviation maintenance and the utmost importance of stringent safety protocols.

At the time of Amiri’s accident, the plane had just completed a flight from Tehran, and passengers had disembarked. The situation underscores the critical need for safety measures, as even a brief lapse or miscalculation can result in dire consequences.

While details remain scant following this heart-wrenching accident, the aviation community waits for the full investigative findings to prevent future tragedies. PEOPLE reached out to Varesh Airlines and the Chabahar Konarak Airport, but as of now, there has been no further comment. Boeing also had no information to add.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Abolfazl Amiri during this incredibly challenging time. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event.
