Matthew McConaughey Wishes His Son Levi a Happy 16th Birthday: ‘Enjoy Your Journey’

“Me and your mom hope we’ve done as good of a job as we can,” the ‘Interstellar’ actor told his son in a clip posted on Instagram

Matthew McConaughey is passing on some wisdom to his eldest son Levi on the teen’s birthday.

Together with a montage of photos of the 16-year-old with his parents posted on Instagram on Sunday, July 7, the Dallas Buyers Club star shared a message for Levi in a voiceover.

“Alright Levi, coming on that age, buddy. About to be out on your own,” Matthew began. “Me and your mom hope we’ve done as good of a job as we can. You’re not gonna really have us as a safety net out there in the wonderful, wild world forever.”

The Magic Mike star — who shares Levi with wife Camila Alves McConaughey — went on to impart a little fatherly advice while encouraging his son to enjoy all that life has to offer.

“Just go out, enjoy. Be aware of your surroundings. Be yourself. Know when to say yes, know when to say no, know when to say maybe,” he continued. “See the good in everybody else, but know that not everyone else is always paying attention.”

“Take your time. Enjoy the journey,” Matthew’s heartfelt message concluded. The actor captioned the post with a similar, straightforward phrase: “Enjoy your journey.”

The Interstellar star and Camila welcomed Levi with Camila on July 7, 2008. The couple also have two younger kids: daughter Vida, 14, and son Livingston, 11.

Levi appears to be following in Matthew’s footsteps as he gets older. For Father’s Day in June, he starred in a Lincoln campaign with his famous dad. In one of the ad spots posted on Instagram, the pair sit in a car as Matthew tells Levi how much he loves to drive.

The series included three videos, with the True Detective actor giving his son driving advice in one.

“Now, your mother and I, we hope we’ve raised you well enough to be responsible for yourself, to take care of yourself, to be aware of your surroundings. Driving yourself for the first time, I’d be lying if I said we weren’t both a little bit nervous. But that’d be natural I think,” Matthew says.

He then warns his son that not everybody follows the rules of the road, so he needs to be careful.

Matthew ends the father-son talk in a similar manner to how he concluded Levi’s 16th birthday tribute. “Enjoy the journey, enjoy the drive. Congratulations,” he says, before he and his son decide to avoid the highway and take the backroads.
