Video shows dog starting house fire by turning on stove in middle of night

In a surprising incident, a dog’s curiosity led to a house fire after it accidentally turned on a stove in the middle of the night, igniting some boxes on top of it, officials revealed.

Early in the morning on June 26, the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a call from a family on Rushmore Drive, Colorado Springs. They reported a fire on their stove, which they managed to put out quickly. The call came in at around 4:43 a.m.

“Engine 23 arrived on scene at 4:47 a.m. at a residential home with no visible fire or smoke. Upon investigation, crews did not find any active fire but did find evidence of a fire,” the Colorado Springs Fire Department stated on social media.

The homeowner, a man, had extinguished the fire before the crew’s arrival but was later taken to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Thankfully, no one else in the house, including pets, was injured.

“After talking to the homeowners and reviewing their home security footage, we determined their pup got a bit curious and accidentally switched on the oven which had some boxes on top of it,” informed the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

The video footage revealed the dog jumping up and placing its paws on the stove, seemingly inspecting the boxes. Authorities believe the stove got turned on accidentally when the dog jumped down, causing the fire from the ignited boxes.

The homeowners were promptly alerted by their Apple HomePod, which sent a “high heat” notification. This allowed them to react quickly and contain the fire before it could spread throughout the house.

Fire officials used this incident as a reminder of essential fire safety measures at home.

“This is a good reminder to always have working smoke alarms inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor of the home, ensure all combustibles are away from your stovetop/oven, and know two ways out of every room in your home in the event of a fire,” advised the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
