Danny Trejo is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable tough guys, appearing in films like Con Air, Machete, and Heat. But behind those rugged roles, Trejo reveals a softer side, especially when it comes to our four-legged friends.
Unfortunately, Trejo shared some sad news with his fans: his cherished Chihuahua, Dixie, has passed away 😢💔.
On Instagram, the 80-year-old actor posted a heartfelt message, announcing the loss of his beloved teacup Chihuahua, Dixie. Accompanying his post was a photo of a smiling Trejo holding Dixie in happier times.
“Hold your babies tight for me please,” Trejo wrote in his caption. “Today I lost my little Dixie Wixie.”
Followers were quick to support Trejo, offering condolences in the comments.
“We are so sorry for your loss,” wrote the Best Friends Animal Society. “Sending you lots of love and remembering all the good times with her.”
Comedian Gabriel Iglesias shared, “I’m so sorry Danny. Our little ones are our babies.”
Actor Brian O’Halloran added, “My deepest condolences to you and your family. Dixie Wixie could not have had a better guardian than you and your family.”
Fans were touched by seeing this gentle side of Trejo. While the idea of a tough guy owning a Chihuahua named Dixie Wixie might seem amusing, it’s well-known that Trejo has always had a big heart for dogs.
As an advocate for dog adoption, Trejo has been active with organizations like Best Friends Animal Society and Spay for LA. He strongly supports adopting from shelters and is against buying from breeders.
“These breeding houses all need to shut down,” he said in an interview with K9 Magazine. “I love all dogs, but some people are fixated on breeds. Look, they’re dogs! They’re our responsibility now. We domesticated them, and it’s up to us to care for them.”
“Every time I walk past a shelter, I know we’ve failed in our responsibility to protect dogs. Period.”
Trejo’s home is filled with rescue dogs: Zeke, Raven, Coco, Duke, and John Wesley Hardin. His pack includes two pit bulls, a Schnauzer, and a mixed-breed dog. John Wesley Hardin is named after an Old West outlaw, and Duke honors the legendary actor John Wayne.
In the past, Trejo also cared for two dogs named after Beatles songs: Penny Lane and Sgt. Pepper. He humorously shares that he prefers dogs because cats remind him a bit too much of some of his on-screen co-stars.
“I’m just a dog person,” he said. “Cats remind me of movie stars; they think they’re so entitled.”
“I love dogs… I don’t like people who don’t like dogs!”
Rest in peace to Danny Trejo’s beautiful little dog Dixie — our hearts are with this movie legend during this challenging time.
