Emmett, the Beloved Cheetah Who Formed a Lifelong Bond with a Labrador Retriever, Has Passed Away

Sometimes, the most special friendships blossom between the unlikeliest of pairs. These heartwarming stories remind us all to see beyond our differences.

One such famous story is the extraordinary friendship between Emmett, a cheetah, and Cullen, a Labrador retriever, who were inseparable companions at the Columbus Zoo.

Sadly, it is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Emmett has passed away 💔😢

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio shared the somber announcement. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Emmett, a cherished member of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium family,” they wrote on Facebook.

“Emmett was more than just a cheetah; he was a symbol of resilience, companionship, and the incredible bond that can form between animals and humans.”

Emmett was born in 2016, but complications led to his mother rejecting him. Zoo staff nursed him back to health, and once stable, Emmett found an unlikely best friend—a Labrador retriever pup named Cullen.

Cullen is one of the zoo’s “cheetah dogs.” These dogs help calm the naturally skittish cheetahs, providing emotional support. When Cullen was paired with Emmett, they formed an inspirational friendship.

The two quickly became inseparable. Cullen acted as Emmett’s surrogate family, boosting his confidence. Photos and videos of their playful interactions have inspired many worldwide, making their story a viral sensation.

“Emmett and Cullen were inseparable, balancing each other perfectly,” the Columbus Zoo shared. “Emmett’s cautious nature was complemented by Cullen’s confidence, and together, they brought joy to everyone they met.”

Thanks to his lifelong bond with Cullen, Emmett matured into a strong, confident cheetah. He delighted zoo guests and served as an ambassador for his species.

Emmett also contributed significantly to cheetah conservation by donating to the cheetah blood plasma bank. “Emmett’s willingness to help other cheetahs, even as he brought joy to millions of Zoo guests, showcases his remarkable spirit,” the zoo stated.

Although Emmett brought joy to countless people during his unique life, he recently faced serious health issues. The zoo reported that he passed away after being sedated for a medical evaluation due to changes observed in his blood work.

Staff members fondly recalled Emmett enjoying “racing at top speed in the Watering Hole,” socializing with visitors, and enjoying treats like ice snacks and shank bones.

Emmett is survived by his best friend, Cullen, who will continue to play an essential role in the zoo’s cheetah care team.

“Emmett started his life on shaky ground but grew to become one of our most beloved and impactful residents. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the profound contributions he made to cheetah conservation.”

Rest in peace, Emmett. You will be dearly missed by many, including your best friend Cullen 💔😢 Your incredible friendship will always be remembered.
