Volunteers from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), a charity lifeboat service operating across the UK, conducted a rescue near Castlegregory in County Kerry, Ireland. They credit an unexpected group of bystanders for their success.
According to the BBC, the lifeboat crew first noticed a pod of dolphins, which led them to spot the struggling swimmer.
The bottlenose dolphins were gathered around the man, seemingly trying to draw attention to him. Without their help, the rescuers might never have found him in time.
“The casualty was conscious and immediately recovered onto the lifeboat and brought Fenit Harbour to be taken to hospital,” the RNLI shared, according to the BBC.
The man had reportedly been missing for 12 hours and was utterly exhausted. It’s sobering to think how this situation could have ended tragically if not for the timely intervention of the dolphins.
Bottlenose dolphins have been sighted off the shores of Ireland in recent years. Researchers believe this particular pod mates and breeds in Scotland.
