My Contractor Hid the Wrapper Under His Boot Before I Made It Down the Steps

The wrapper was UNDER HIS BOOT before I even made it down the driveway steps.

My daughter was three weeks old and I was holding her against my chest with one arm and the insurance folder with the other, and I almost missed it – Derek’s foot moving sideways, slow and casual, like he was just shifting his weight.

He wasn’t.

The wrapper slid under the truck bed and I stopped walking.

I had paid $18,400 out of the insurance settlement for premium architectural shingles – the kind rated for 30 years, the kind the adjuster had specifically written into the claim.

The folder in my hand had the product spec sheet. Page four. I had read it twelve times in the hospital while my daughter was under the warmer.

I crouched down – daughter and all – and looked under the truck.

Three wrappers. Generic. Stamped with a brand I had never seen, a name that looked like it had been designed to sound like a real brand without being one.

My hands were cold despite the heat.

“I’m calling the inspector,” I said. “Do not touch my house.”

I had $18,400 worth of fifteen-year shingles on a house I planned to be in for the next twenty.

Derek came back from the street with a different face. Calmer. Like whoever he’d called had told him something useful.

“Look,” he said. “I understand you have concerns. But the job is done, the materials meet code, and frankly, I’ve been doing this for eleven years.”

Eleven years.

I didn’t say anything. I just opened my folder to page four.

What Page Four Said

The spec sheet was a printout from the insurance company’s approved materials list. My adjuster, a woman named Connie who had been thorough in a way I hadn’t expected, had stapled the product data sheet directly to the back of the itemized estimate.

GAF Timberline HDZ. 30-year architectural shingle. Minimum weight 240 pounds per square. Wind resistance up to 130 mph.

I held the page up.

“This is what I paid for,” I said. “Can you show me documentation that what’s on my roof matches this?”

He looked at the page. Then at me.

“The invoice says premium shingles.”

“The invoice says GAF Timberline HDZ,” I said. “Page two. Line seven. I have a copy.”

That was a lie. I didn’t have a copy on me. But I had read that invoice enough times to know what it said, and I was betting he didn’t remember exactly.

He didn’t call my bluff. He just looked at the roof again and said, “I’d have to pull the paperwork from my truck.”

He didn’t move toward his truck.

My daughter had fallen asleep against me. I could feel her breathing. There’s something about holding a sleeping baby that makes you very, very still, and I stood there in that stillness and waited.

Derek looked at his phone. Then at the house next door. Then back at me.

“I can have my supplier send over the product specs,” he said.

“Great,” I said. “I’ll be calling the county building inspector while you do that.”

The Inspector and What He Found

His name was Walt. Walt Drennan. He had a gray mustache and he showed up in a county truck two hours later and he did not seem surprised to be there.

I found out later that Derek’s company had two open complaints with the county. Not closed. Open.

Walt went up on the roof with a kit I didn’t recognize, some kind of punch tool and a gauge, and he was up there for about twenty minutes. Derek stood in the driveway with his arms crossed. I sat on the porch steps with the baby in the carrier and I did not look at Derek once.

When Walt came down he had a clipboard and he didn’t look at Derek either.

“Product doesn’t match the permit spec,” he said to me. “Weight’s off. I’m issuing a stop-work order and flagging this for the contractor licensing board.”

Derek said, “That’s not necessary, we can work this out – “

Walt handed him a yellow form.

Just handed it to him and walked back to his truck to write up the rest of the paperwork.

Derek stood there holding the form. The smile was gone. What replaced it wasn’t anger exactly – it was the specific look of someone recalculating, figuring out the new angle.

He turned to me. “You know this is going to delay everything by weeks.”

“I know,” I said.

“You’ve got a new baby. You don’t want construction dragging on.”

My daughter made a sound in the carrier. I put my hand on the back of her head.

“Derek,” I said. “Get off my property.”

What Happened in the Next Thirty Days

He didn’t make it easy.

His company sent a letter through their lawyer five days later claiming the materials used were “industry equivalent” and that I had verbally approved a substitution during a phone call on April 14th.

I had not spoken to Derek on April 14th. I was in the hospital on April 14th. My daughter was born on April 12th.

I still have the discharge paperwork. I still have the call log from my phone showing no calls to or from Derek’s number on that date.

I sent both to the contractor licensing board. I sent both to my insurance company. I sent both to Connie, my adjuster, who responded within four hours and forwarded everything to the insurance company’s fraud unit.

Fraud unit.

That’s when I understood what I’d actually stumbled into. This wasn’t one contractor cutting corners on one job. Connie had seen it before – storm chasers, she called them. Companies that follow hail events and wind damage, file themselves as preferred contractors, pocket the difference between what insurance pays for and what they actually install.

It’s not rare. That’s the part that got me. It’s not rare at all.

The licensing board opened a formal investigation. Derek’s company had done forty-one jobs in our county in the previous eight months. All of them filed under the same insurance billing codes for premium materials.

Forty-one.

The Roof

The legal stuff took time. It always does.

But the roof didn’t wait for the legal stuff.

My insurance company, once the fraud flag was raised, assigned a new contractor through their vetted list. A guy named Phil who showed up in a truck with actual GAF packaging stacked in the bed, who walked me through every bundle before it went up, who showed me the weight stamp on each one.

Phil was not charming. He didn’t smile much. He ate a sandwich in his truck at noon and didn’t try to make conversation.

I liked Phil enormously.

The new roof went on in three days. When I stood in the driveway and looked up at it, it looked different – not just visually, though it did look different, thicker, the shadow lines more defined. It looked like something that would still be there in thirty years.

My daughter was six weeks old by then. I’d started sleeping in four-hour stretches instead of two. The construction noise didn’t bother her, which surprised me. She slept through the nail guns like they were rain.

Garrett stood next to me looking up at the roof and said, “It looks like a real roof.”

“The last one wasn’t,” I said.

He nodded. He’d been angrier about the whole thing than I was, in his quiet way. Read the invoice line by line. Get the product name, the model number, the weight rating. Look it up before you sign anything.

And if you see someone shift their weight and something slides under a truck, stop walking.

Don’t let the smile rush you. Don’t let the baby in your arms rush you. Don’t let the idea of dragging things out rush you.

Crouch down and look.

The wrappers are usually there.
